Hi, Rubinstein here

It's been a while and I've lost track somehow. Recently I tried to
start playing on akrasiac.org and was overwhelmed by some of the new
options, namely with and without virus. What does it mean? Search
function here in google wasn't helpful, nor could I find something on
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/
From context it could be some sort of editor called 'virus', but if so
what a name! Almost impossible to find that beast if you don't already
know where. *evil*

p.s. I've no more access to a real newsserver and I'm not comfortable
with google groups. So, if there's anything wrong with my post, any
feedback is welcome (to my mail address if you like)

The devs of virus surely have a homepage, not? Explaining other ones
software really shouldn't be your problem. Usually I'm able to help
myself, but just searching for 'virus AND editor' is pretty fruitless,
though. Wink

The main reason for my question was probably a misunderstanding: at
first I thought the virus option would somehow affect gameplay, but
now I guess it's all about editing crawl.init as an alternative to vi,
isn't it? For me it's hard to understand why there must be an extra
option for this. But then I never quite understood why there has to be
an editor started on server side rather than just sending a simple
text file...

[OT]
I have no controll over line wrapping in Google groups. Hope it works
"automagically".

It is a tiny vi-alike editor, yes. Sorry if that isn't clear; I think
there was a news post on CAO briefly that explained it in a little more
detail, but not much. Sorry about that. Maybe I should make a FAQ or
something?

It looks fine to me.

Yeah, I can't find it either Smile I just used it because it came packaged
with dgamelaunch.

As an alternative to ee (which is more like nano or something), but yes.
The option is there because different people like different text editors;
there is nothing stopping anyone from copying their local file and
pasting it into either editor Smile That said being able to upload a config
file would be a good idea; if it isn't already on the feature request page,
I'll add it.

The only reason that I have a server-side editor is that the software I
used to set up CAO had a server-side editor, and so that's what I did.
Because of playing on a different dgamelaunch server previously, I never
even thought of it as weird, but I guess it is a little strange... Smile

It seems to!

Yeah, that's what I did before. Not the most elegant solution, but it
works. But that's also why in the first place I didn't get the idea of
an alternative serverside editor because this always apeared to me as
the most obvious solution:

> That said being able to upload a config file would be a good idea; if it isn't already on the feature request page, I'll add it.

Great and agreed.

Now I understand. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Smile
