Post subject: The counterintiutive solution to my connection issues.
Archived from groups: alt>games>coh (more info?)

Well I finally got a case to put the guts of my old machine in.
This let me hook up my old Aopen FM56/ITU2 ISA modem again.

Unfortunately one of the network cards had died so it seemed useless.
Then I checked and, sure enough, the motherboard in my main system had
an onboard lan system.

Link up and all is good (after a lot of tweaking.)

My connection no longer loses DNS so I don't have to reconnect all the
time.
But, I seemed to be getting a lot more LCTMs - as in one every 5-10
minutes - the good news was that it always regained connection.

Watching the LAN and dialup connections on the old machine via the task
manager I noticed that every time I got an LCTM the dialup connection
dropped to 0 usage.

Having also noticed that at no time did the dialup connection ever
exceed 60% usage I decide to try dropping the connection rate.

So the solution to what seemed to be a saturated link, was to drop from
49.3k to 33.5k.

Not only is it smoother, but I jacked all the graphics up to high levels
and even turned the physics stuff on, and still no LCTMS at all.

You realize this is the Geek equivalent of you speaking Latin. The
number of people in general who have any idea what you're talking
about is getting smaller everyday.

Eventually, this info will go the way of LPs and 8 tracks.

This is not uncommon. If your modem and ISP were having probelms
negotiating the faster connection, disabling the advanced features would
indeed give you a more stable connection. The ISP I used to do tech support
did this all the time.
