Would I see a big improvement on Tomb Raider Anniversary with a AGP
512MG DDR X1650 VIDEO CARD versus the GeForce 256 mg 6200 a-le video
card That I have now?
I only have pci and agp slots on my motherboard and no pci-e slots.

Is the ATI X1650 card for an AGP bus? Seems I recall it is PCI-e /
Crossfire. It IS a newer card, and the 6200 LE is really a
gamer-wannabe card. A 6800 or 6800GT would run TRA fine.

Dabs sell X1650s for AGP. A Dabs Value and a Sapphire retail at £37.24 &
£43.82 respectively. Not really too sure about the power of ATI cards, as
I'm in the nVidia camp personally. If the X1650 is comparable or better than
an nVidia 7600GT, then you'll have no problems (that's what I played TRA
with!)

McG,
I believe it is an agp 8x card, but I was told it would work as a agp
4x card.

JW,
Not sure how to compare the two. Is there a site to compare ATI X1650
with an nVidia 7600gt?

I know there is something out there, but I cannot seem to find it today.
Best I found was a somewhat lacking list on Tom's Hardware, but that did
seem to indicate that the 7600GT does have more power than the X1650.

Have you tried eBay? You should be able to get a cracking AGP card on there.
Or there's this:

http://www.eurowide-pc.co.uk/peak-512mb-geforce-7600gt-tvdvi-retail-p-29420.html

If you wanted to spend a little more, there's this one:

http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=GC-AN78GS256&af=50

I wouldn't go any lower than the 7600GT if you're going for nVidia. So avoid
the 7600GS. Not sure where that equates to on the ATI scale. Hopefully
someone can assist.

And just as I was about to send...I've found this:

http://www.reportlabs.com/testbed/version1/grv1/grtop50.php OK...not a
graphical representation of relative power, but it should help. You can see
that the 7600GT has almost 10% more power than the X1650. Annoyingly, the
7800GS isn't on there, but...
http://www.reportlabs.com/testbed/version1/grv1/grtop50.php seems to favour
the 7600GT over the 7800GS.

OK...and finally...back to ATI...how about the HD2600XT? There's a couple on
eBay going for £50 + £10 P&P. But if you look on that list, it's more than a
50% performance increase over the 7600GT!! Smile

Just realised that it was the PCI-E section I was looking in for
comparison...there are less cards in the AGP section, but I'd assume the
chipset gains would be similar between the two interfaces?

Thanks JW!
Hmmm....ebay has one of the hd2600xt and it sounds good.
http://cgi.ebay.com/VisionTek-HD2600XT-AGP-512MB-GDDR3-for-HDTV-AVIVO-..._W0QQit
Current bid is $37 + $15 shipping and handling. Might consider bidding
on that one.

Most definitely worth bidding - though if you check "Completed listings",
you'll see that most of the AGP ones have recently gone for about $100, as
opposed to about $50 for the PCI-E ones. I'm afraid that's an increase you
may have to put up with, as AGP is on the wane. I bought an old Socket 939
processor for my dad's PC recently. It cost almost twice the price of an
equivalent AM2 processor. And again, when I replaced the RAM in my laptop,
it, being DDR RAM, cost almost twice as much as my fiancee's DDR2 RAM!

The bid on the x1650 card is up to $76 with shipping and handling. Sad
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120250235115&ssPage...e=ADME:
It ends in about 3 hours and not sure how high of a bid to put on it.

I don't mind you saying at all, and it's good to share advice. All I can
really say is that I've ordered significant components from Eclipse on two
or three occasions. Not had a problem yet. I currently have a pre-order for
a Core 2 Quad Q9450 with them. It was a good price, and it was paid for with
credit card, so no risk to me.

Cheers

From what I saw on the completed listings, I'd probably have gone up to
about $100.

Albert

I've got a AGP 512mg X1650 in my rig and it plays a dream.

I decided to go back to ATI after having a real bad time with an NVIDIA
card, and I haven't regretted it for a second Smile
