Hello,
I haven't run Dag very much since upgrading my PC almost two years ago.
Long story short, I'm blanking out on the installation. I know there was a
workaround somewhere. I still have the save game folders and the CD and if
anyone has the most recent XP installation method I'd appreciate it.
I can run Arena okay, that's pretty close and Morrowind is a blast but it
isn't Daggerfall and Yetta Gen is itching to go for a nice long dark crawl
before Oblivion comes out. Know what I'm talking about? >> Stay informed about: cd install for XP |

Do a search on google for dagnt5x.zip. It's the full game in an XP
installable format, but still requires the original game CD to run.
It actually got sound working on my PC, so I heard the sounds
of Daggerfall for the first time.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
DOSBOX 0.63. was somewhat successful. The sounds were good but the play was
a little off. >> Stay informed about: cd install for XP |

Hi. After some false starts I've managed to get Daggerfall working on my
machine but only running it through XP. Due to the unplayability of my CD
I'm using an image instead. However I've run into the invisible quest object
problem and need to switch to DOSbox. How do I get it to work with the
image? (DOSbox gives me a message telling me to check that my cd is in the
same drive as I used when I installed it)

You need to create a small .exe file (I named mine dag.exe) which
contains the code: @ fall.exe z.cfg You also need to make sure that
the pathcd: in the z.cfg file matches the path: file. When you start
Daggerfall in DOSbox, type dagger, enter, name of your new .exe file,
enter. I type dagger, enter, dag, enter.

Thanks for replying, I had wondered if the group was dead.
I've done as you suggested, but when I try to launch the game from my
dag.exe file a new line appears in the dosbox window but nothing else
happens. I copy & pasted the code you have given into the file, so do I need
to do something else? I'm a total n00b when it comes to code and so on. >> Stay informed about: cd install for XP |

My experience is that Daggerfall takes a very long time to load. I'm
talking about 10-15 minutes here. You can check on it by doing a
CTRL+ALT+DEL and checking on DOSbox. If it is running, you just need
to wait. Once it is loaded, it runs just fine. If you are seeing a
blank screen, then it is my guess that it is just taking forever to
load.

There is something else you could try. The DOSbox Daum Cafe
http://ykhwong.x-y.net/cvs/frame.html provides a front end for DOSbox
which many people find very helpful. There is a new build as of July
30th. I tried an older build with the last DOSbox (not the newest
one) and it shortened the load time for Daggerfall dramatically. It
also made Daggerfall unstable and I experienced a lot of crashes, but
that may not be true now.

I sat by the computer reading with dosbox open and trying to load daggerfall
for 2 hours, I checked periodically that it was still running, and it was,
but nothing happened. I did notice however that the CPU usage was at 100%
would this be why it's taking so long? >> Stay informed about: cd install for XP |

That could be the problem. I suggest you try the Daum Cafe front end
for DOSbox that I mentioned in my other post. You will need something
that can open a .rar file to use it, though. The crashing problem I
had may have been solved by now, as I have noticed a marked
improvement in trying to run Battlespire. This new DOSbox build is
more stable than the last one I tried.

That's insane! I use DOSBox 0.72 and Daggerfall takes just 10 seconds or so
to get loaded on my PC. It runs much faster in my emulator than it did back
when I used to play it on a 386. If you have too little or too many CPU
cycles dedicated to running a game in DOSBox, it can slow down the
performance significantly. Also, unless your PC absolutely requires it, make
sure your CPU core emulation is set to auto or dynamic. I haven't had to set
it to full for Daggerfall, which would also serve to slow it down. Hope this
helps!
