I'll soon have a Series 2 DT Tivo, and cable (alas, bye bye Dtv). I
need a cable box for that, right, because the Tivo unit can't decode
all the channels on it's own?

Depends on your provider.... Here in the Baltimore area, Comcast cable
provides up to channel 99 that my s2dt's can use directly, and only need the
box (with an ir blaster), for channels 100 and greater.. and just to add
more strangeness, I added the HD pack, and the new box has a DVR built in,
so I can record non hd stuff on the s2dt (controlled by the IR blaster), and
view or record the hd stuff directly on the hd cable box/dvr.....

Depends on the cable company and what channels.

With some cable companies they transmit their basic channels "in the clear"
and you will not need a box.

Good test is whatever your cable ready TV can receive from the cable co on
it's own, the TiVo will as well. If your TV can't decode them, neither can
the TiVo without a box.

If by DT TiVo you mean DirecTV, then you can not use a cable box, nor
a cable by itself. It will only receive DirecTV signals from the dish.
There is no other way to receive a signal.

Sorry. I wasn't clear. The "DT" refers to dual tuner. I'm leaving
Direct-tv, moving to Optimum (central NJ). I have a non-Direct-tivo
unit. My question is whether I need the cable company's box? I think I
do, to get channels above 100. cheerio!

Yes, you'd need the box. But if you want to retain dual-tuner use you'd
have to upgrade to a TivoHD. It has two tuners and two cablecard slots. It
can be used on a regular TV. You don't have to use it for HDTV. The
upside being if/when you upgrade to an HD capable TV it'll already work.

Oh, excuuuuuse me!

Sorry if I confused DT with DirecTV, which has been around longer than
Dual Tuner TiVo's, except perhaps the series 1 DirecTV TiVo's that had
Dual Tuners all along (even if they weren't always enabled by the
software).

Maybe you should cut back on the caffeine.

Have a nice day.
