Post subject: Looking to buy (of help building) a MAME machine - Dallas, TX
Archived from groups: alt>games>mame (more info?)

I have too many arcade machines and it is time to downsize. I think the
best method would be a MAME machine so I could sell a handful of my
other games. I've read some about MAME, and thought it would be fun to
build one myself, but realistically, I'm a visual learner, so reading
all these online manuals to build a machine kind of makes my head hurt
Smile It's kind of overwhelming to get started.

Does anyone have a MAME machine, ready to go, for sale in the Dallas
area? I really don't need a totally pimped out one. There was actually
a simple 2-player (+ trackball) cabaret on Craigslist for $300, but
that seller flaked out on me. I realize that is on the very cheap
end... but I also am not willing to consider these machines I've seen
people asking $3000 for either. I don't mind a cabinet that needs a
little paint and sprucing up, and I don't need a new $1500 P4+ computer
running it, as I think that's overkill for me.

-----------------------------------

If someone is local (I'm in McKinney, TX 75069), and doesn't have a
machine, but knows MAME well and is willing to help me build my own
(for a reasonable fee), that's cool too. I have a very sturdy cabinet
that should work, have a couple old computers (or can buy one cheap on
Craigslist), but would especially need help with the controls and the
programming/software aspect.

So... anything?

Thanks!
Mark

Sorry - just editing the subject line for my overlooked spelling error,
and to make it more clear Smile

Hammer,

Just a few quick questions:

How much are you looking to spend?
What kind of games are you MOST interested in playing on it?
How big of a machine do you want? (the largest I've MAME'd was a 50"
Virtua Cop)
How authentic do you want it?
What real arcade games would you be willing to trade for one?

Amount depends on the setup. Since I'm happy with a very simple (2P,
joysticks, maybe 4 buttons each) setup, plain old cabinet (I can work
on aesthetics myself later on), and an older computer, I'd prefer to
keep it reasonable. You guys know more than I do what amount that would
be - $400-$650 in the right range? Just a 19 to 21" monitor is fine. I
really just need a way to cut back on the number of machines I have, so
if I could sell off a few of mine that I could play on MAME and put 1
standard size (or caberet) MAME in there instead, it would work well.
I'd have to play some of the games on MAME to see what other games I
would trade off. Most likely a dedicated Arch Rivals, generic JAMMA
(currently with Tetris, or could swap in a Disney Magical Tetris,
Golden Axe, POW, a few other boards I have lying around), etc. Have an
Alpine Racer 2 (smaller screen, not the 50" version), Time Crisis
deluxe (half used to be in your barn! - just finished cleaning it up
last week and have a 50" TV for it now), etc. Probably would make more
sense for me to sell off the other games on eBay or Superauction, and
pay cash on a MAME.

Again, I could get the price down by providing my own cabinet (I have
an old Taito cabinet of Pat's that is mighty heavy and sturdy and would
hold up to a 25" monitor), and maybe even the computer (what is the
minimum computer needed - I have a couple of old Pentiums maybe 100 mhz
and 200 mhz?). Have plenty of joysticks and buttons, too, but no IPac
or JPac or anything to connect them to.

Tell you what, I'll try and email you late tonight and go over some of
the basics you'd need. I'm sure we can work something out pretty
easily.

Would you be interested in a candy cab with computer and everything.
Still has jamma hook up in it. Two player 6 buttons on each. Im down in
Austin by the way. I just want to sell to have the money for a pinball. If
interested let me know and I will get you all the specs on it.

Sorry to jump in to this post, but I tried emailing Raven and it says I can't since he's External (from newsgroups maybe?).

Anyways, Raven - if you could drop me an email... I'd like to talk to you about the Virtua Cop cab you MAME'd. I just picked one up yesterday and will be modifying it and could use a little bit of advise.

Thanks a lot!!!
Bob
