Does it work in 98 ? Does it work properly in XP (i.e. no movement

It is designed to make the game playable in DF. You
do not need it in 98. The problem with XP is, that it
handles
memory radically different from 98 ( a whole new
concept)
The program, - I think - , emulates a win95/98
environment.
It is not like moslo or the other speed-modifying
utilities.
It simply installs DF from scratch. As far as
movements they
are perhaps slightly faster than you are used to and
it takes
some time to get used to it. Everything else seems
normal
One other thing. The intro only plays when you
starts. If you
have a character already, you will not get the intro
when
you start the next ones
The city and dungeon maps can be a bit tricky too

Duh what is the name of the program, just in case I am going to get
another copy of Daggerfall; my CD bit the dust and I have to get a new
one, the back up didn't work.
I have the VDMS installed and am hoping that when I install the new
Daggerfall it kicks in.

The program is dagnt5x.exe. You can download it as
dagnt5x.zip here: (41 MB)

I've run DF in 98, yes it runs (technically) but there were various
problems with movement, particularly climbing and (moving backwards I
think) that made it unplayable.
I found it ran nicely on a P100 with 64M, so now I'm using a 166
(actually an underclocked 400) with 256M, and it's much smoother than
the 133 with 16M that I was previously using. >> Stay informed about: buggy mage guild quest? |

The problems with climbing and moving backwards (particularly when in
Sneak mode) are not due to Windows 98, but to a too-fast processor.
If you use a slow-down utility with 98, the game will run quite well.
On the other hand, if the processor isn't too much too fast, pressing
the Run key while climbing or backing up will allow you to climb or
back up. The problem is that you increase your Run skill instead of
your Climb skill.

I run Daggerfall on a 133 with 33M and it runs pretty very, but
crashes occasionally.

I've never been able to get a slowdown program to run without crashing
my machine. I suppose I should have another go sometime. I think I've
discovered that DosBox only crashes when in full screen mode, of course
running DF in a small window is not REALLY what I want to do, so I
suspect that it might be a problem with the graphics driver. But since
I've had the problem with at least three versions of the drivers I don't
have much hope of another version solving things. And at least one
other program that I use regularly started crashing last time I upgraded
them, and I had to use a version in between the one I was using and the
latest.

Does it then USE the run skill to work out how/whether you climb? >> Stay informed about: buggy mage guild quest? |

When I played Daggerfall on my Windows 98 machine (and it was 98, not
98SE), I installed Daggerfall while in Windows, then set up a small
batch file that started both slow.com and Daggerfall. I don't know if
that would help you, but it made Daggerfall more stable than it had
been on my old machine. The reason I quit playing Daggerfall on that
machine was that I discovered a small memory problem that made one
task in the final dungeon of the Main Quest almost impossible to
complete. I went back to the old AMD 5x86 and save early, save often.

I really couldn't tell. All I noticed was the next time I rested
after climbing a high wall, the message I got was "Your Running has
improved", or something like that. Funny, as many times as I have
seen that message over the years, I can't remember the exact wording.

find it). >> Stay informed about: buggy mage guild quest? |

Sorry about slow.com, but I can't find it again, either. I know it
was on a Daggerfall site, but it may not be available any more.
Anyway, I couldn't find the site again. However, I found links to two
other slow-down utilities here:
http://www.uesp.net/general/gen95.shtml#slowdown and I would think
that they would all work pretty much the same way.

I have a copy lying around on my web area. There is no link to it
currently, but you might be able to fetch it by addressing it directly:
http://home.online.no/~itlandm/slow.com
If that doesn't work, I can mail it to you. It is not big.
