I've taken the one where you have to put someone to sleep 3 or 4 times.
The person has never been there. The first time, I thought it might be
because I didn't have the bought sleep spell when I took the quest - I
bought it after clicking yes. But after that I made sure I already had
it, but still nothing. Anyone else experienced this?

Another question is on picking quests. If you turn a quest down, does it
lower your rep? I remember reading a FAQ about it once that said save
before taking quests so you can reload if you take a hit, but I can't
remember if it said to reload til you get a good quest, or just if you
take one and fail, and I haven't had any luck finding a FAQ that covers
that again.

And I just remembered Nyctolops suggestion about searching google groups
about the custom classes, so I'll take a stab at sifting through that
again now.

The first time I did this quest I had a problem with it because I was
looking for one of the two-dimensional people you usually find on a
quest, but the person I was looking for was a three-dimensional type
that looked like one of the enemies you run into in a dungeon. Is
there no one in the house at all? If there are some people there, go
into info mode and click on everyone there to match the name you were
given. Is there an upstairs where you have to climb up a ladder? Is
the building in one of the more southern provinces where you see those
long curving buildings with several doors? If so, try next door to
where you have been looking. Some of those places are duplexes with
no internal connection, but they are considered to be the same house
by the game.

If none of this works for you, try riding or walking out of town until
the wall or houses are out of sight, then return. Sometimes this
resets the characters. Once when I fought a creature in an attic, I
knocked it into the void through the slanted roof by the ladder and
had to leave town a few times before it came back.

You can refuse quests until you find one you like without damaging
your reputation. The only things that lower your reputation with a
faction are failing in quests and not doing a quest for more than a
month or so. The latter usually only really affects you if you have
just joined a faction and don't show up for your next quest for a long
time. That can get you expelled. Most factions will take you back if
you take quests for them anyway. I think the exceptions to this are
the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. You may get new
invitations from them if you continue in your thieving or killing
ways, though.

save first, accept the quest, then reload and ask
again - this is the safe procedure
your rep will not suffer if you say 'no'. Only
inactivity for more than a month (game time)
will do that. Or if you seek alliance with enemies of
the guild

I will try that on the next one, then. It's all Daggerfall province so
far. I want to get as established and set up as I can, using as few
cheats as possible, because of the difficulty I have playing real-time
games. And I've gone through the houses. I may have missed a room in one
of them, on of those with a gazillion doors inside, but the L houses
with the fireplace, table and cupboard downstairs, and the open space
upstairs, makes it hard to miss anyone.

Do you think leaving the city/town and reentering it should reset the
house if the pile for the joining the thieves guild quest doesn't show
again?

Thank you, and you too, Merlin. It will make questing go a lot faster,
knowing it won't hurt to click no 10 times in a row. And much faster to
get the "guard the sleeping mage for 3 hours" quest. Just save after
every success and gogogo.

That brings up another question too: in the guard quests, I never see
thieves and nightblades. I see blood spill when I hit them, messages
when they die.. But never any visible targets, and never any bodies left
by them. Only the knights that follow them in sometimes. I've tried
using detect enemy and nothing. Is that normal, not seeing them?

I just took another one of these sleep quests. Running through the
house, I again could not find my target. Except in one room, I found
there was a spot that, when I hit it, I was stopped cold. I couldn't
move through it, jump onto/over it.. Probably because I had just written
about the nightblades, I wondered if it might be my target. Info mode
gave me nothing, but casting sleep at the spot gave me a message about
her falling asleep on her feet. Is this perhaps a bug, maybe a problem
because I'm running it in winXP?

That is a possibility. You also have the "invisible enemies" problem,
which might be related. I'm going to try to hunt up information on
that, because I have read about it before. It is possible that when
you solve that problem, you will also solve the Thieves Guild problem.

What you are experiencing here is a known bug with trying to run
Daggerfall in Windows XP. I found a thread which might be of some use
to you here:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.games.elder-scrolls/browse_thr.../thread(missing+OR+invisible)+group:alt.games.elder-scrolls&rnum=95&hl=en#bb4938ad21cdca1f

Your problems seem to have something to do with processor speed and
newer video cards. I hope this information helps you with your
problems.

Thank you again. I got the latest drivers for my video card downloaded.
I set it to update through windows while I was downloading and it
screwed it up.. Set it to an earlier driver, and DF crashed everytime I
tried leaving a store. I was tired and just rolled back to the current
driver, and went to bed. I'll be trying the new drivers today, and I
downloaded the free version of moslo.

Very weird.. It's back at the same driver I was (mostly) running it
successfully with, but is dropping me when I try exiting that same
store. I hope the new drivers fix this. But my question is about moslo:
I have to set it to run on a specific program, right? It doesn't just
slow down the whole system? DF starts with a batch, right? Is it.. Wait,
the only program it actually starts is dagger.exe, so I will set moslo
to affect that, yes?

Checking out moslo.. What processor speed is the ideal for DF?

And I'm still having that problem with the new drivers.. I load my game,
turn around and click the door to exit the store, and it drops to
windows. I'm going to try moslo and see if that fixes it. Is thi maybe a
reinstall DF type problem? Seems weird the problem persists from
accidentally switching to older drivers, back to what were good drivers,
and then into the newest drivers. My fingers are crossed for moslo..

I actually used slow.com, but I think moslo works the same way. I
just added a line to the batch file that starts Daggerfall that
started slow.com at the same time. I added another line to exit
slow.com when I exited Daggerfall. If you are not specific with the
slow-down utility, it will slow down your whole system.

Good luck with your video drivers. This has driven some people nuts.

From my experience I would say 400-425.

I hope that solves the problem for you. Having processor speeds too
high for Daggerfall can cause all sorts of problems. I have heard
about the crashing when exiting a building before, but I don't
remember much about it. I'll see if I can find it when I have more
time.

Done got the drivers updated.. I had to reinstall DF because of that. Or
maybe the driver change just corrupted that set of saves. I didn't try
fixsave, I started a fresh character to see what other races are like.
And I set moslo so the game should be running at 315mh. I've tried it as
high as 450 and ranged it down to 135. I still am not seeing the mobs or
quest items. I did notice, and I'd seen it before in other dungeons but
not made the connection, that the pile does show up on the map view when
it's tilted, just like normal treasure. But I've been all over the spot
with no luck.

Are there any other suggestions for me? I don't have the expertise,
luxury or space to put together an old computer to play these on. I also
don't have the know-how to repartition my drive, or the inclination to
go through and reinstall everything, so I can have a dos boot drive, as
was suggested to me by someone else.

If those are the only options, I discheerfully accept my fate, that I'll
never join the thieves guild, dark brotherhood, and quite possibly be
unable to complete the main quest. But I do have hope that someone on
this group is way smarter than me, and can find a solution!

Godspeed, pass the beernuts!

Darn. It must be that Daggerfall doesn't like your video drivers
then. I have hunted all through Google for solutions to this problem
and the only one I found is the one I posted the URL to.

I'm sorry, but I don't know of anything else to try. If the problem
is an incompatibility between Daggerfall and your video drivers, then
a new partition wouldn't help anyway.
