Your newsfeed may be borked. In which case you won't see this post either.

It was indeed borked. I hadnt gotten anything since March 8th. Which is
odd, because I have my server pull from multiple feeds, and checking them
individually, I can see new posts.

Like, ever?

Okay, so I've only been in regional trains, not comparable to
long-distance travel, but still...

Like ever, yes. The routes are pretty limited these days:
http://www.highonadventure.com/Hoa98dec/Amtrak/map.gif

The train era is long past it's prime in the states. The line I took runs
from Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through San Antonio along the way. I
still had a 2-1/2-hour drive to get to the train station at San Antonio. It
was longer than flying (30 hours) but the cost is probably 1/4 of flying and
way more comfortable I have found out. It was really quite restful
traveling that way. You can get up and move around. They have a
site-seeing car with a cafe/lounge, dinner car, and the seats are huge and
widely spaced out. Sleeper cars are still available but pricey to me for
just one night. More than an overnighter and I would probably go with a
sleeper. I just despise driving any more. Too many miles on the road for
work in past years. Bus would have taken 3 days. I will use the train
again. This is the first vacation where I did not have to recover upon
returning home, but was actually very rested. I credit the leisurely train
ride.

I've ridden light/medium commuter rail, including BART (SF), the T
(Boston), and the MTA (Los Angeles).

The only heavy rail I've been on has either been at the Sacramento train
museum (where it's parked) or on the Napa Valley Wine Train, which is
essentially a half-day run up through the valley with a nice meal and a
stop at a few wineries.

I've also ridden on some mining trains up in the Sierra Nevadas, little
things restored from 49'er era. There's a club in Nevada City that operates
a small loop and restores the old equipment, occasionally taking it on tour
on a flatbed trailer.

There's a nice little riding toy train layout in Berkeley, on top of the
ridge behind the university. Another club that operates lots of different
outdoor toy scales.

Sounds sweet.

Trains in Holland are typically commuter affairs (about five hours will
take you from the north of the country to the south), frequently cramped
(standing room only) and often late. I have seen the Thalys (travels
from Amsterdam to Paris, I think) which looks more comfortable, but
somehow I don't think it quite matches up to your new standard of travel.

I've never flown before, so I have no clue what that's like. But
fortunately at my job everyone is invited to a weekend at the boss'
hotel (well, partly his) in Sweden, probably meaning an air trip. I love
this dot com 2.0 age.

I was comparing coach to coach on train versus airliner, train wins. First
class on airliner is the Ritz, but for deep pockets.
