I was going to say a heap, but stuff it.
Prot warriors can solo fine, just slowly. It might depend on your
personality, but they can be just as much fun, if not more, to play
than any other class. Certainly was more interesting than my frost
mage until I respecced to an AoE frost build.
(though they can be discouraging if you try and take on mobs a few
levels higher than yourself while still undergeared, even though you
were able to do that with your other classes.)

I think the problem with some retadins in groups is that, as a paladin, most
people want to think of you as healer-in-a-can. When in fact, as a retadin,
you're more like a druid with high defense instead of catform stealth, able
to do the tanking with Righteous Fury and Consecrate, able to do healing
when you're not on the front line, and able to put a large amount of damage
on a foe when needed. The thing is that you're never going to be the Main
Anything unless your group is really hurting. You're the Jack of All
Trades, master of none.

This I'm fine with. I know my role in a party is as the off-tank,
off-healer, off-DPS. I tend to stay loose in the group, acting where I'm
needed. Main tank having problems? Pop the Righteous Fury, wade in and
rescue him, keep the aggro on me while the tank is being healed. Main
healer out of mana in the middle of the fight? Help out with my own spells.

Retadins have a place in any group, but you just have to make sure all your
main bases are covered. Then they're like any other 'off' class -- hunters.
druids, shamans and so on. (Yes, I know the phrase 'but a <fill in the
blank> can <fill in the blank> just as easily as a <fill in the blank> can'.
But often they're not geared for doing exactly that. At L70, sure, you can
afford to specialize. But getting to L70 is the problem here.)

The problem here is not what my toon will be able to do at 70, with the
Proper Gear. The problem is _getting_ to 70, the fact that I was finding
Outland to be a little tougher than advertised and needed advice as to what
I should have been doing to help boost my DPS/survivability to the point
that I could get along in Outland.

Once I'm 70 and I get all the blues and/or purples I need, sure, I'll go
Shockadin or Tankadin and be in on the Kara raids and so on. But it took me
a while to get to 60. (Alt syndrome, I am very guilty of it.)

One thing to note about Hellfire Peninsula, if you're geared with just quest
rewards and uncommon stuff, the place initially is _hard_ for almost any class.
The upshot is that there are few easy quests and some that are doable if you
are really careful on not pulling more than one at a time. And the quest
rewards from Outlands are really, really good. So I'd suggest that you keep
checking AH for some upgrades and slowly work through HFP quests carefully and
understand that by the time you're out of that zone leveling is again a lot
easier.

It might be worth considering a 'pure' dps class then, but if you like your
paladin in general, I'd suggest on staying with it. Of course getting groups
might be a bit harder than for dps that also brings in some crowd control.

Protection warriors are a bit slow to level, and people don't seem to accept
non-prot warriors. (The difference is noticeable, but not unplayable if the
other classes are a bit more careful with their threat output.) For druids
their number one leveling build is also their tanking build. Smile And I think
for lesser extend Protection for paladins isn't that bad either for leveling.

And of course tanking is usually a lot more stressful than dps, so classes
who've tanked pre-TBC want something easier and those who haven't got the
opportunity are trying now. (ie. Druids and Paladins)

I'd seriously suggest speccing a full hedghog pally.. thats prot with
a shield spike and most of the prot talents, but definitely reckoning
and blessing of sanctuary.

Sure, you won't be doing much DPS with your 41dps mace or sword, but
you can completely stop worrying about getting adds.. or rather, you
still worry about getting adds, but the worry is getting enough! And
you do pleanty dps through shield blocks, the spike, bessing of
santuary and reckoning to make up for it.

Murlocs are a prot pally's best friends.. or they would be if they
lasted long enough. Smile
