I've played with a few (The ones that are bundled in Cosmo + the
essential Omen threat meter), but am I missing a trick? Are there any
add-ons that you think are essential for mages?

Don't know what your other addons do, but an addon like Dotimer can
track your cooldowns, as well as give you a visual time representation
on your sheep, making it easier to know when you need to re-sheep.

Spellcraft is good for saving button real estate, one part of it
creates a button that allows you to do any of your teleport/portals.

There's one called Control Freak that takes the macro writing out of
crowd control. It'll let you sheep something, and keep an eye on it,
while you keep something else targeted.

You could do the same with a macro I believe.

Omen is probably the only one that is absolutely *essential* (though I
don't mind playing old-style now and again, which you are effectively
doing if the tank doesn't have it). Here are the others I have found
very useful:

Quartz: Optimise your cast-time to maximise your DPS. As a bonus, it
also monitors your sheep.

Decursive: A row of buttons, one for each party member or pet, which
light up when they are cursed or charmed. Left-click to decurse,
right-click to sheep. Amaze your team-mates by being the only mage
they know who actually decurses in combat.

Geist: 25 extra buttons for your portals etc. that appear at a key-
press. Other similar options are available, this is just the one I
happened to install.

SWStats and Recount. Both have good points, both have flaws, so
install both. Study the information to find out how you can perform
better.

TrinketMenu: Not that important, but handy if you switch trinkets a
lot, or use trinkets with long cooldowns, where the auto-switch option
comes in handy.

I used to do it with macros. I needed two macros, one for shattrath
teleport/portal and one for everywhere else, using shift/ctrl/alt
for all the combinations. Spellcraft saves me two buttons and two
macros, both of which are in short supply on my mage.

Beside some of the things already mentioned I also like "SmartBuff" on
all my chars that can buff to remind me to refresh them.

You can find it at the curse site.
