BS offers little to Prot as well. I bought some epic boot plans for
the day he finally hits 70 and maxes his BS. Perhaps WOTLK will fill
in some of the gaps.

Yeah, I wish I'd just taken up a second gathering profession instead
of BS. So far it's the most useless production profession I've done.

For leveling up. In some cases it really is the cheapest way to level
up the profession even if you can't sell the crafted item. Many
professions are very expensive to level up, and it is hard to sell
many of the crafted items. Thus the best way to level up is to craft
items which require the least amount of mats. Some low level items can
sell quite well in AH, but you don't get many skillups from them.
It is useful to have a disenchanter alt here. The AH value of many
items is roughly equal to the value of the dusts you get when you
disenchant them.
You can't disenchant crafted shots though... When I leveled up
engineering, I crafted many shots, but I couldn't get any of them sold
in AH. I just destroyed them. >> Stay informed about: some some questions abbout play WOW. |

And it's rediculous how much Thorium you need to get past the levels
that need it. That's where I gave up on Blacksmithing on my Paladin.
And I was also a little miffed that Fel Iron Bars take two ores not
one. Like the professions that need mining to level up aren't hard
enough.
I'm undecided whether I'll go Ret and PvP or Prot and PvE for my
Paladin when he gets to 70. If I go Ret PvP the weaponsmith weapons
might be good to get but I'm not sure that I can be bothered to level
it even for that - I'll just grind honour for the PvP Weapons. I'll
probably go PvE anyway as I'm going to be PvPing with my Rogue.

Yeah, the Armorsmith questline, and the quests to get all the Imperial
Plate stuff, was awful. To get the required Mithril, I rode around and
around The Charred Vale. For hours at a time. For days at a time.
For the Throium, I farmed that Garrison Armory place in The Blasted
Lands. For hours at a time. For days a time. There were days that I
didn't actually play - I just farmed that Armory. Do a circle, walk to
the end, walk back to the entrance, wait for vein respawns, repeat.
Maybe it's the same with other professions, but, for example, by the
time I'd grinded the appropriate mobs, finally had the three recipes
drop, farmed the required amount of Khorium, Primal Water and Primal
Mana to make the Khorium Ward set, I had enough marks and honour to
purchase the S1 belt, pants and boots.

Jill,
AFAIK, Khorium can spawn in place of any Outlands mineral node, it
just rarely happens. It did make for some fun times when TBC first
came out, though. Everyone mining HFP, eventually every node re-
popped as Khorium, and no one had the skill to mine it
I use gatherer to track nodes for me, and 9 times out of 10, any time
I find a Khorium node, it's on a pre-existing mineral location. And
those that aren't, I eventually discover a "normal" mineral node
there. >> Stay informed about: some some questions abbout play WOW. |

The Thorium segment of BSing is, indeed a royal pain, though it's
alot easier now.
Un'Goro crater circuits used to be the only viable one to do it fast
enough not to die of boredom.. But now that the Silithids are no
longer elite, the burrows in Silithus are great. There's a fair amount
of free-standing Thorium (and Arcane Crystals, of course) as well
there.
Maybe people didn't automatically think of it because it's such a
god-awful zone to get through, but without the elite hives....
I think I did Un'Goro and Silithus twice each (that is, two complete
sessions of maybe 2 hours) to get just about all the way through that
segment. Maybe had to go back once more, it was a while ago.
I also remember seeing al lthat Fel Ore while I was levelling through
Hellfire etc.. of course, when I went back to mine it there wa very
little to be found. >> Stay informed about: some some questions abbout play WOW. |

Gah! Learn to use the AH, to sell the stuff you don't have a use for.
I've started 2 toons *just* to be bankers, unfortunately the first
discovered she had to go out into the world and level up if she wanted
to get Tailoring and Enchanting above level 75 (*stupid* choices for a
Warrior, but not shabby for a banker, if they hadn't made that rule),
and she's going to ding 70 as soon as I can stand to work on her a bit
(dinged 69 the night before last), and the second one got bored
standing around Darnassus, and I wanted to see how a Rogue played, so
she's now 53 (and a *blast* to play). But because I've always used the
AH to sell stuff (and speculate a *little* bit, but I can't resist a
bargain that I *know* will sell for a lot more) all 6 of my toons that
hit 40 got their mount right away (ok, so one (the Pally) was free,
but I had/have the money for her), same for the 2 who hit 60. I had
the money for the slow flying mount when my main hit 70, it took a
while before I saved enough for her epic, but the Warrior *should* be
able to get her epic when she dings 70 (within 1K or so if I combine
the Main's funds with the Banker's and hers)

Sure can If you can't sell it on the AH, carry it around until you
see someone of the appropriate level with a gun, they'll love you for
it.

First off, DEing stuff will only get you about 40 (? Maybe less)
points, you have to *make* stuff to level up enchanting. The problem
there is getting the materials, which *can* come from DEing stuff, or
be bought at the AH. Warning, though: Enchanting is *very* expensive
to level up, I'm doing my best not to invest gold in it and as a
result my Chanter is basically stuck at around 268 (and has a *ton* of
stuff that didn't sell at the AH that needs 275 Enchanting to DE).

Well, that's where I broke the rules. I looked up the specialization
quests and thought the mats "wasted" were just incredible, so I didn't
do them. There are BoE patterns out there you can get that will take
you past that rough spot in the high 200s. I still used a lot of
thorium but not nearly so much I think, or the opening mats for that
matter. I've found BS relatively easy to level once I was past 300,
even though all of the items made seem to be oriented to dps and not
tanking.
So I'm 350ish BS without a specialization. Up to this point at least,
that's not been a problem since none of the specialty items from
either armorsmithing or weaponsmithing are causing me to lose any
sleep for my Prot pally.

there is so much bad news about enchanting. I wish I had seen that
before I got involved with it.
the engineering, I have my paladin mining and blacksmithing and sending
stuff to the warlock engineer, that makes and sells stuff. (99% that he
just could not use at all) but if I see some gun toting toon that is
interested, I will arrange to create as much shot as he desires. and the
low grade armour what kinds of prices would it get on AH?

That can vary quite a bit from realm to realm. I think it's Thottbot
that lists an average price for most items, but the best way to know
what the price is on *your* realm is to download (and *use*)
Auctioneer. Again, this is where having a banker comes in handy, you
can either start a new toon and immediately run him to the nearest
capitol city, or what I do is spend a couple hours at most getting
them through the starter area (so they can pick up professions, but
that has led to the problems I described previously), *then* run to
the city. Then find a 5-15 minute time when your computer is on but
you're not at it (when I take my shower works for me) and let the
banker scan the AH during this time. After a week of doing this at
*least* every other day, preferably every day, you'll have a pretty
good idea of prices, after 2 weeks you'll be very well set.

Sheesh - everyone's so down on professions that require a teeny bit of
effort. Maybe it's just cause I'm newer to the game, but IME if you pick
decent professions when you begin your character you should have no
trouble levelling them up as you progress - unless you're power
levelling through the game, in which case you better have plenty of gold
in lieu of time to level professions. Me? I'm still enjoying playing
through the game with multiple characters.

I am too, and with *all* professions on one toon or another, and yeah,
most of them level up their profession at about the same rate as the
toon, but the Chanter is the exception. She basically hit a wall
somewhere around 225, just checked and she's at 263 currently, 4/5 of
a level away from 70, and even when I push her to 275 so she can DE
all the literally hundreds of items in her mail, I don't see the wall
being overcome ;-(

I've had pretty good luck with this guide:

Try to get the White Bandit Mask tailor recipe. It's good for conversion of
Mageweave to dusts and essences and is actually profitable. >> Stay informed about: some some questions abbout play WOW. |
