I was playing Zork Zero: The Revenge of Megaboz, and when I filled in
the bottomless pits, I climbed down the ladder to the room, "Under The
World," and then I went into the room, "Hanging From Roots," and I let
go of the roots, and I fell into an alien world with purple forests and
volcanoes, but I smashed into the ground and died. I then tried
droping the Perch down into the alien world, and then I used the Pigeon
to teleport myself to the alien world, but I was eaten by a giant
slug-shaped creature, and I died. How do I enter this alien world
without dying?

Brian

To the best of my memory, you can't.

That's correct. Letting go at "Hanging from Roots" is in the list of
"fun things to try after winning the game", in the official hints; I
believe that dropping the perch and then following it via pigeon is also
on there, but it's possible I just figured that one out myself. All of
the things in that list are, at best, pointless but amusing; some of
them are actually detrimental to your ability to continue the game.

How common is it for out-of-the-way, unnecessary but fun things like
that to be included in more modern games? They were in every Infocom
game I ever played long enough to bother checking on, but I don't
remember running across them in the freely available games... the
closest thing I can think of is the Last Lousy Point, which isn't quite
the same kind of thing.

"Tookie's Song" (one of my favourites from that year's comp) had a big
list of fun things to try at the end. I'm sure there are others.

Dutch Dapper IV: The Final Voyage has such a list. I know, since I put
it there Wink

We included quite a few such things in Vacation Gone Awry. The amusing
list displays a dozen items but there are lots more. We tried to
provide some sort of response for everything our beta testers tried.

where the game is no longer available.
