Zern vs Mindflayer

A munchkin monster-vs-monster notion came over just now, while I was
reading up on Zerns in Monster Manual IV. Being that they like to warp
the nature of livign things and being that the monster is a
grotesquerie, I couldn't help but see similarities between it and a
Mindflayer.

Would they work together effectively or would they combat one another?
If the latter, who would win?

Thoughts? Comments?

I think the possibilities for a mercinary zerns, neutral zerns, or
hateful zerns in regards to Illithids/Mind-Flayers. exist. The merc
zernns would Not be Thralls, but paid high to attack targets that are
'dangerous'. Any Thrall zern is under a charm monster effect, which
they might break free and become hateful and 'dangerous.' Neutral zern
haven't dealt with Mind Flayers enough to know about Thralls...
So, Zern vs Zern and/or Mind Flayers exist, but the fight would be
even exept for merc zern/mind-flayer teams. But the mind-flayers have
plane shift and would 'run' for it, usually.
