Post subject: YAVP: Mortimer the Hill Dwarf Fighter of Zin (7 Runes)
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>misc (more info?)

Mortimer is my seventh winner. He was easily my most powerful
character. I wanted to try something different this game. This was my
first win with Maces, Heavy Armour, Zin and also first Hill Dwarf and
Fighter since I like to avoid ascending the same race or class
twice(might be hard from here on out as I've ascended my
favorites--Crusader, Gladiator and Monk). Zin was pretty good, but Holy
Word seems to have highly variable damage so you can find yourself in a
lot of trouble if you hit the wrong side of the bell curve.

I originally planned to clear get all the Pandemonium and Tomb runes,
but I lost my will after being stuck in the abyss for an hour and then
failing to even make it to the second level of the Tomb(and barely
escaped with my life) despite heavy use of Holy Word on the Greater
Mummies. Still, I feel good about this win. I got two runes from areas
I'd never entered before and I at least made an effort on the Tomb.

I got lucky w/ a +4, +3 =Slaying and a rod of destruction [ice] quite
early on, but after that this game was a struggle all the way through.
By the time I entered Zot: 4, my standard kit included only +ResMut and
+ResElec--I never found a =ProtectionFire and I had to switch weapons
to get it. The only source of +ElecRes I found all game was a storm
dragon hide(eaten away to -2 by glowing shapeshifters turned acid blobs
in the vestibule of Hell) and I never found a permanent levitation
source--not even a stinking ring. I also lost numerous potions and
scrolls to cold and fire attacks--I finished Zot: 5 with no ?Blinking,
no !HealWounds, no ?Recharging and no charges left in my /Healing.

Speaking of Zot: 5--Don't ever play around there w/o +ResElec. The only
source of electricity resistance I had was a -2 Storm Dragon Armour, so
I eschewed it in favor of the +4 Gold Dragon Armour, figuring I was
buff enough to defeat the lone electric golem.

To make a long story short, I got electrocuted down to very low HP by
an electric golem and electric dragon whipsawing me. I read two scroll
of blinking which moved me about 5 steps total away from the electric
golem. I quaffed !Speed and just ran for the upstairs. Somehow I made
it, but this could easily have been my second cl27 character to die in
Zot. I will *never* enter Zot without Electricity Resistance again,
much less Zot: 5. I would ahve been absolutely fine w/ Storm Dragon
Armour and the Great Mace of the Beast.

I'm not sure what's next. This was a pretty fun game. I might try some
other roguelikes like Quickband. Most roguelikes pale in comparison to
Crawl's unbeatable combination of lightning pace, deadliness and
variety.

Antaeus (Coc:7)
Asmodeus (Geh:7)
Ereshkigal (Tar:7)
2 orbs of fire
2 ancient liches
A Serpent of Hell (Geh:7)
Boris (Zot:3)

Dispater (Dis:7)
2 Killer Klowns (Zot:5)
Adolf (Crypt:3)
4 electric golems

Almost got me in the end.

Norris (D:25)
12 golden dragons

First hide didn't show up till Zot. I coveted one all game long,
though.

A few things from the vestibule:

(-11, 14, Hell)
the uncursed hand crossbow "Sniper"
A hand crossbow made of some black material.
It poisons the unbranded ammo it fires.
It enhances your eyesight.

a -1,+0 orcish executioner's axe

an uncursed runed eveningstar of protection

the uncursed broad axe of the Volcano
It poisons the flesh of those it strikes.
It affects your AC (+2).
It causes teleportation.

an uncursed runed great mace of disruption

the +3,+2 great mace of the Beast
It emits flame when wielded, causing extra injury to most foes and
up to
double damage against particularly susceptible opponents.
It protects you from fire.

(-10, 15, Hell)
the +3 pair of gloves of Bodily Harmony
It affects your damage-dealing abilities (+1).

(-13, 16, Hell)
6 potions of cure mutation

(-14, 15, Hell)
a +4,+3 ring of slaying

[Used this for a long time, but the +4,+3 seemed less important than
more evasion or regeneration in the end game. I could be wrong though.]

Finally, here is something I thought was funny:

You are in the Abyss.

Dwarves get nearly as much HP as trolls, I expected trolls to have
more.
That's very good AC/EV!

Thanks. I liked my first Denis-style character. I might try a Paladin
next. Maybe a Kenku, although I'm not sure what class to pick because
I've won with Gladiator/Monk already. I might just repeat one.

Nah, it's a lot harder without Detect Creatures and Crystal Spear. You
can't kill stuff as fast with a warrior. Rods of destruction only
soften up the 1's for the holy wrath weapons.

The Abyss banishment *was* boring though. I'm not sure if I have the
temperament for Pandemonium because it's so *long*, but I think I'll
give it a shot with my next character... I'm making incremental
progress--two new runes in this win. I might have tackled it this time
but the Tomb shattered my confidence and I was running so low on
consumables.

They do but they usually have lower fighting skill. Tr should get 5
more HP/6 levels compared to HD and 6 more than MD according to Erwan's
chart:

Yep, I must say I was pretty impressed with Heavy Armour although I
wish it worked against electric golems! They owned me even at 49/20,
yet they're completely nerfed when you have +ElecRes.

Well you could pick a human Paladin Smile
Or 'Fighter' is a good place to start -- and can be any race.

But you won't kneel over and die from mistakes costing you a few extra
turns in trouble. Plus things get a lot more personal when you resolve
conflics face-to-face and not a firestorm nuke Smile I like fighters.

I remember reading that High AC values help protect you against
electricity on their own -- no tested it though.
Electric Golems are extra trouble though, since they're so fast and
have electric damage in melee.

It's funny how whims like these can shape games. Overall a feature, of
course. Especially fopr winners like you.

You might be a bit harsh here. I reckon no-electricitiy-resistance is
doable with high EV types. Those tend to be more magic-related anyway
and might be able to better prepare for e-golems and destroy them.

Yes! (But what do you mean with 'most'? Anything specific?)

It seems to be standard lore here on rgrm that ResMut is the way to go
in Zot. As you say, conservation can be more important in
circumstances, IMHO too. It changes playing style, of course.

Trying to get Zin out of the poor man's corner in the Ecumenical
Temple?

Cool stuff. Tough competition to boots of running, even more with
Dex-bases fighters.

Although it's frustrating, it's one of my favorite features. Every
character has to face unique challenges and come up with solutions
within the context of limited time and equipment.

For Cocytus... There are lots of lakes and potions of levitations
freeze. I forgot I could control teleport in there though.

I had 20 EV and monstrous HP when I fought with the Electric 8 and I
still got abused. I dunno, I won't risk it again.

I did wear an "ResMut until I took out the orbs of fire just to
eliminate hassle.

Actually he has the prime real estate, right at the front!

I don't know, I never entered.
