My second win overall, and my first as a spell caster. Also my first
character to ever worship Vehumet instead of Sif. I would have to say
that the decision worked out nicely.

My demonspawn mutations helped alot, first bringing me +2 AC, and then
the ability to teleport. Horns grew at some point and knocked off my
+1 helmet, but that was later replaced with a cap of see invisible, I
think from a scroll of acquirement.

This character never could find a usable source of poison resistance,
so I just learned the spell cure poison instead. No problem clearing
the mines, or the lair. I took down the nagas, and also the swamp. I
would later return for the Slime rune. It was my first time diving for
this rune, and it was not as tough as I had thought. I actually had 3
levels of cold resistance, though I dont think I was hit by a single
azure jelly. Of course my first and only char to go in their died
within 5 steps by an azure jelly. That is what happens if you dont
have the proper resistance.

I used the necromantic spell of Animate dead *alot* this game. I was
almost raising and commanding large armies of zombies. It was great!
Going back and forth on the stairs to Vault 8 to fight the guards there
was made much easier by taking the stairs to level 8 with 6 zombies
around me. I would return, and the 7 of us would pound on the 2 guards
that could manage to run up the stairs with us! The tactic worked like
a charm, and I cleared the level for once, actually grabbing all of the
good treasure, insteading of grabbing the rune and running.

I almost died to an executioner at some point, I was down to 15 hit
points or so. I cast blink, not having any scrolls, and it landed me
next to some hostile skeleton. It hit me, took me down to about 10. I
rounded the corner, went to Zot2, fought a deathmoth, and rested to
catch my breath.

Zot5 was way easier than ever before, this being my 3rd time there.
The first time, I died after seeing the orb. The second time, I
escaped with a level 21 HDFi. This time, I entered the level as a
level 27 wizard wearing a robe of the archmagi, and a ring of wizardry.
I was taking out all things fire resistant with my Mystik Blast. It
was the first time I had found a book of Annihilations, and of course
my first time with this spell. I loved it. Bolt of fire took out
everything else. The orbs of fire and master liches were dropping to
the energy ball!

I did train up enchantments and air magic for the purpose of casting
deflect missiles, which I was able to cast well. I didn't need it as
much as I thought I would though. I was going to train earth, but
there just wasn't enough time left in the game. That will have to come
with another char.

I cleared the right hand side of the map. There were two traps,
separating the rooms, but neither was teleport, like for my first
winning char. I zapped a few things, and casually walked up to the
orb. No hyperventilating with my heart pounding so loud that I think I
will pass out. I was very calm and collected. I put on my ring of
tele control, and I Invoked my Teleportation Demonspawn mutation.

Thanks to the travel patch the run back up was easy. Thanks Darshan!
One thing I like about this game is that if you leave Zot5 with the
Orb, you will probably win.


I lost a level to some drainer-type, but who cares anyway? Dump is

This kind of thing is why I think zombies are underrated by a lot of
Crawl players. They may be so-so at killing things, but they're GREAT
for control of the battlefield.
