Post subject: YAVP: Lars the Hill Dwarf Fighter (my first YAVP!)
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>misc (more info?)

So I've been playing Crawl off and on for a few years but I never even
so much as gotten further than grabbing one rune in a couple hundred
games. Then all of a sudden, wham! I start up a hill dwarf fighter
and he just keeps going, and going, and going. This is my very first
YAVP for any roguelike and I've gotta say, it's an amazing sense of
both accomplishment and relief... now I feel I can experiment more and
play more freely now that I don't have to worry that I'll never have a
winner. =)

This win was for the last stable Crawl release, no patch. I tried
playing Stone Soup one weekend and while I think the new features are
absolutely wonderful, I decided to keep playing the original Crawl
until I had escaped with the Orb of Zot at least once so I could
better appreciate the changes. Now that that's out of the way I can
say hello to shop and stash tracking and auto-travel and all sorts of
other goodness.

I'm definitely still a Crawl newbie and haven't read all the spoilers,
so any tips would be appreciated.

I basically didn't turn off any skills during the game. My plan for
character development was just to start with Short Blades and then
switch to the weapon skill was most convenient based on what I found
in the dungeon (ended up being Axes). I grabbed a crossbow relatively
late in the game to pick off stuff that was running away. I also
ended up winging it without any spellcasting ability, being at the
mercy of found items. It was a little tough going since I didn't find
any items of conservation or preservation the entire game, but careful
stashing helped.

I kind of wished I had trained Dodging earlier... by the time I
decided to try pumping points into it, 20000xp had only raised it from
undiscovered to skill level 3, and it didn't seem like it was worth
the effort. Is it recommended to train Armour and Dodging
concurrently, for a heavy armor user? Would a high Dodging skill have
impacted the game all that much?

This was my first time entering and clearing the Snake Pit, the
Vaults, the Hall of Blades, the Crypt, and the Elven Halls... quite a
whirlwind tour with tons of new locations and monsters that I'd never
seen before. I even went back and did the Slime Pit after those,
wearing nothing but my artifact ring mail and gloves. Was in the
vestibule of Hell and about to choose a region to enter, but at the
last minute changed my mind at the recommendation of a friend (i.e. I
got scared enough that I didn't want to risk losing my character at
the doorstep of Zot). I then took a final breath of air, went back to
my stash and took aim at Zot. Was a little worried that I was only
singly-resisting fire but I had saved an Enchant Armour scroll in my
stash and was able to skin a Gold Dragon on Zot:3. Double-stacked
resist fire made me feel a lot better about facing those nasty Orbs of
Fire that I had heard about.

I almost wish I had taken a screenshot of the moment I entered the
final chamber and beheld the Orb of Zot for the very first time in my
life, but on hindsight that doesn't really matter. I'm pretty sure
that the image is going to burned into my memory. =)

After a little break, I think I'm going to try to win with a caster
using the latest version of Stone Soup. It'll be quite awhile before
I'm ready for those inane challenge games.

What never? Well, hardly ever.

Hell Knights and the uniques Maud, Margery and Frederick all have a
small chance (< 5%) to be generated with non-artifact war axes, battle
axes or broad axes of speed.

This was likely because you chose axes as main weapon. Dwarves are
good with axes.

Congratulations!
I find it impressive that you scored your first ever roguelike win in
Crawl, which is rather unfriendly to non-veterans.

<started with short blades, later switched to Axes>
You could have picked Axes right from the start - dwarves are _much_
better with axes than with swords. If you get an early short blade "of
venom", that can be worth using to wear down ogres and orc warriors
with hit-and-retreat, but even then, it'd be reasonable to switch off
their skill at level six or so.

Ring mail is relatively light-weight (only gives a small EV penalty)
and thus can profit nicely from good dodging. Unfortunately, your
Dodging skill will never advance unless you take your armour off (or
read a manual of dodging).

Stone Soup tries to give you both - once you've accumulated enough
Armour skill to offset your evasion penalty, you'll start to train
Dodging even while wearing your armour (but on the flip-side, your
Armour training will [mostly or entirely] stop).

> Would a high Dodging skill have

It could have given you a good Evasion even while wearing your Ring
Mail, perhaps enough to dodge many ray attacks. It wouldn't have
affected your EV rating while wearing the gold dragon armour.

Axes will never gain speed as an ego enchantment; it can appear on
artefacts, but that's quite rare.

I don't think the protection should have made that much difference,
but the Shield rating of 11 must have reduced the numbers of blows you
took substantially.
The higher damage on a battle-axe (or even an executioner's axe) would
have improved your kill power enough to handle the late game even
without a shield, but your success proves that the path you took was
just as reasonable as going two-handed.

This is an awesomely nice random artefact. Electricity resist is
particularly important for low-evasion characters like this one.

Thanks! I did play vanilla Angband and a few variants for awhile
before I started playing Crawl, but I never got past stat-gain (I got
extremely frustrated with losing characters after devoting so much
time to them). I find the tactics in Crawl to be so much more dynamic
than Angband and the fast, intense gameplay (especially early-game) is
definitely addicting and makes losing your character not nearly as
painful.

One thing I had tried with some previous characters was switching back
and forth between heavy armour and elven chain mail so that I could
train Dodging to a reasonable level early in the game, and then
switching back to heavy armour for the rest of the game.
Unfortunately, I never had a character last long enough to see if this
was a reasonable strategy. In vanilla Crawl, would that be
worthwhile, or are the points better spent just on pure dodging or
pure armour for the duration of the game?

Ah, that would explain it. =)

I was planning on at least experimenting with an executioner's axe as
soon as I found one (I had a scroll of vorpalise weapon stashed for
the purpose), but I didn't run into one the entire game. I guess
they're fairly rare?

Ah, that explains how i got hold of a demon blade of speed, which, my
reading of the source suggests, also shouldn't be produced by random
ego-item generation - i got it from a hell knight.

So that's another reason to try really hard to knock out all those
hell knights and major uniques, right? Thanks for the update.
