Here's the idea: if you have a figurine of a monster (Say, a figurine
of a tock troll) , you can cast a spell that associates the figurine
with any monster of the same type (ie, any rock troll).
The association would be ranged (range would be higher with blessed
figurines) and would require line-of-sight (although being skilled or
expert in the relevant spell-skill would allow you to use telepathy
instead of normal sight.)
Once a figurine is associated, it becomes a voodoo doll.
A figurine that is cursed, or any voodoo doll that becomes cursed would
associate itself with the caster of the spell rather than the targetted
monster.
Foo shamans should be able to cast this spell, if they are lucky enough
to stumble across a figurine that matches the adventurer's race.
You shouldn't be able to voodoo unique monsters, obviously, but you
shouldn't be able to get figurines of them anyway.
The association is broken if (a) the figurine and taget find themselves
on different levels, (b) the taget dies or (c) cast cancellation at the
doll.
In cases (a) and (b) the voodoo doll disintegrates. In (a), and (c) the
target is unharmed. In (c) the doll simply reverts back to a figurine.
Voodoo dolls in bones files would revert back as well. Wishing for a
voodoo doll of a monster should result in either (randomly) an
appropriate figurine or a spellbook of voodoo.
Once an association is made, you can start doing nasty stuff to your
voodoo doll.
The obvious one is to stick your voodoo doll with a knife, (interface
would be a little tricky here, I think the most elegant implementation
would be to wield the figurine, press 'x' to swap hands and then
(a)pply a weapon wielded in the other hand) but you could have all
sorts of fun:
- throw the voodoo doll into water and watch the monster drown on dry
land.
- dip the doll into a ! of acid.
- Polymorph the doll. (???)
- Lava.
- Cursed bag of Holding.
- Oh, you guys come up with some more, I'm sure you can.
You could also allow nice things to happen to the figurine: Healing for
instance. This would allow you to voodooize your pet and heal it up
even when it isn't in range. (hold the doll, cast healing on self, or
dip the doll into a healing potion). Beware though, dolls inmain
inventory are susceptible to any attacks upon the adventurer: If you
get hit by a fireball and you're carrying a doll of your cat, then it's
kitty flambee in the next room.
So, it looks and sounds like a lot of coding, but it would be a really
fun addition to the game.
What does anyone think?
