This is not true, my hurthling merchant got crowned while wearing ring of immunity and received shock immunity (I confirmed that by casting revelation afterwards). So it seems like the immunity granted by crowning can't be one granted by worn equipment, unless you already have all immunies, in which case it grants you one you don't already have intrisically.
