If you die due to falling, how do you manage to notice the snakes?

I guess it depends on how long a "turn" is in ADOM... quickly glancing
at some D&D sites makes it seem like a turn there is anywhere from 1-6
seconds, depending on the system, and I think ADOM would be comparable.
(Actually, since it is based off of action points and whatnot, game
turns are dependent on your character's speed, etc., but let's say 1-6
seconds, for argument's sake)

Perhaps you were lying, crumpled at the bottom of the pit, and had time
to notice during your 6-second turn that "hey, there's some snakes
crawling out!" before you die.

Or, I think in the death message, it says the character snaps his or her
neck, so you wouldn't necessarily exactly be able to "see" in the
traditional sense. Perhaps, then, it was a fairly deep pit (for fun,
let's say... just deep enough to train Climbing when you climb out). On
the way down the pit, you had enough time to notice, "Hey, there's
snakes going up, and I'm going down!" Then *snap* and game over.

Anyone else have any interesting theories for this?

On the way down, presumably. As the French say, 'ce n'est pas la chute
qui compte, c'est l'atterissage' (it's not the fall that counts, it's
the landing). Smile

(Quote from the film La Haine)

After your next breaks, you're still conscious for a couple of minutes
until your brain shuts down from lack of oxygen.

Nice thought! One wonders whether the PC would live were the snakes to
remain in the pit as a sort of cushion for his or her fall. Yikes! Very Happy

[playing maybe a Drakeling, who are as close to snakes as a PC can get,
I guess...]

'Suddenly you fall into a pit! Aargh! Some snakes group together to
cushion your fall. You welcome your slivery friends!"
