Brief history on this message. I was running down a corridor with my
Hurthling Priest, looking for somewhere to do some cooking. I found a
beetle in the corridor. Went to attack it, and got the Y/N message. Oh!
Tame bug. OK. I can handle this. Swap places with it and head for the
room. Well, the bug follows me in. So I decide, why not? Close the door
behind us both, figuring I'd be safe, and start cooking.

No, this probably doesn't end how you think it does.

You start to cook the uncursed giant rat corpse. The door is opened.
The fire beetle attacks the homunculus. The homunculus is killed! The
fire beetle suddenly looks more powerful. You are successful.

Looks like I inherited a door-guard by accident! Smile Now if only I could
make it follow me around...

Can you ctrl-O and command it? Then you could make it follow you
around...

Unfortunately, I met my end in the anthill with that character, so I
never had the chance to test. But I hadn't considered trying that. Next
time I meet a friendly monster, I'll give it a try. I wasn't a Druid,
so I hadn't even remotely considered that I might be able to _actually_
command it. I just figured they were reacting to a high
Charisma/Appearance and being completely nonhostile (and even,
apparently, friendly).

I believe that that is the case. (It's the case even for Druids'
nonhostile animals, actually, unless I'm very much mistaken.) They are
falling into the same hostility category as townsfolk or shopkeepers -
or for that matter nonhostile uniques - normally do: just one step short
of tame.

Yes, this means that the inhabitants of Terinyo (etc.) would have a good
chance to attack hostile monsters if they ever encountered any. They'd
probably die immediately, but it could still be good for a few laughs.

Did it. Tried it. Couldn't get it working. But it was only one monster,
so maybe I'll have more luck with another. Or maybe it's just the druid
'pets'. They aren't considered Companions, though.

Confirmed: when the Little Girl would get ticked at me (recall the
'bored me' quest a day or so ago), the other children and occasionally
farmers would sometimes try and kill _her_, rather than me. I think
only the ones that weren't on the screen when I booted her, though. The
others, for some odd reason, seemed touchy at me.
