YACD - Never gotten this far, could use some advice...

So I've cleared the Lair/Snake Pit/Hive. That's the farthest I've ever
gotten folks and I've got some great gear this time. I haven't found
Tomb yet and really I have no idea how to use it or why I need it but I
hear that people need it so I've been looking for it. I've been trying
to amp my Earth but really at this point I'm not sure. I was trying to
remember to dump points into enchant so I can get the repel missles
working well. Should I be going for anything else? I've mainly been
using bolt of cold and iron for my destructive spells.

In my stashes I think I have sustain abilities and warding.

I wouldn't say "need" it, just greatly rejoice upon finding it. The
Tomb of Doroklohe puts up walls on all 8 sides of your character,
destroying any items in those squares if needed (but not monsters, so
you'll have to leave melee range for it to be really useful). Makes you
as good as invulnerable.

Repel Missiles will work the best it can even without much Enchantments
skill, but you'll need a lot to get the vastly better *Deflect*
Missiles casting reliably.

Controlled Blink is so powerful it's not funny; keep an eye out for the
Book of the Warp.

Be prepared to start having to gradually depend less and less on Bolt
of Cold a few thousand turns from now.

I don't have the feeling Warding helps much if you already have
Vehumet's protection, and besides, you don't spend much time at melee
range with a DECj. Sustain abilities is nice in some "advanced"
situations: certain parts of Hell and playing around with Decks of
Power and Decks of Wonder (with these, you'll need to keep your stats
above three, not zero). But normally it's not worth carrying around IMO
if you have any decent rings.

Two-rune depth is really deep to be without an enhancer staff.
Definitely a good use for your next (first?) scroll of acquirement.

There's a dilemma here: if you want the Book of Earth, you may need a
book acquirement timed for when your Earth is higher than your
conjurations; if you want a staff of conjurations, you want the
opposite. I'd advise going for the staff first, then turning off
Conjurations so Earth climbs above it.

The RNG has been mean, it seems.

You might as well read these, since you don't get better than a sabre
of speed without getting a quick blade, and those are rare. Not that
you'll be fighting much anyway, I guess. Smile

A ring of ice would be nice, but a ring acquirement isn't especially
likely to give you a ring of ice.

So you *have* been fighting. Well then, read those scrolls now.

You've got Selective Amnesia. Any bad choice of learned spell you might
happen to make can be repaired at your whim. Fill these up! Ice Storm
or Crystal Spear could be a good choice, or Deflect Missiles if you
have access to it; same for Controlled Blink. Your blink power is nice
and all, but there's nothing like being able to say at a moment's
notice "I want to go right there, right now."

-Crawl- YACD: James the Grappler ... Advice Please - Hi all. I ran a lot of HDFi's through Crawl and got pretty far. I learned a lot of the basics of this game from those... Thanks Everyone!!! -Crawl- YACD: The RNG, drunk again - I'm trying to do something double-secret, and I don't have all the necessary pieces for that, yet, but geezopete! All I've done so far is Dungeon down to 15 or so, Snake, Lair, Hivem Mines, and Elf (just got back -- thorough waste, pretty much). Also....

-Crawl- YACD GEAE almost died on Zot:5 - This one can't win the contest anymore, but I'd still like to escape with the Orb. There's a big problem though: got teleport the mutation but no single !oCM. Before I entered Zot:5, I *wisely* replaced my ring of slaying with a =oTC, only to get a very....

-Crawl- YACD: Quigley the Cudgeler - So I started off with just a little mace and stock armor. Then I found some +2 scale of cold resist and things became a bit easier. I didn't find the Orcish Mines until D:10 I think or so. It was so far down that I thought I had missed them :) I just...

-Crawl- YACD DECj spell problems - So, I have a DECj with spell problems. I haven't found the right books so far (Except a lucky early find of a Book of Flames, which was *very* nice): No Selective Amnesia, and worse - no Deflect Missiles. I have Repel Missiles, but without DM I fear..
