This is my fourth ascension, after a barbarian, a ranger, and a healer.

I decided to play an archaeologist because of the "cuisinart" style:
Grayswandir and another silver saber together, both fully enchanted.
Initially, I hadn't planned on going genoless or wishless, though I had
seriously considered some conducts, but I decided quickly to do them.
Nethack was starting to seem to easy in the late game, and I was
impressed reading about the difficult conducts people have kept. I've
thought about some of the variants, but I had wanted to ascend all the
classes in vanilla. I'm going to play heck^2 next time, though.
Genhemon just isn't much of a challenge any more.
This may seem like a long game, at 97,000 turns, but this seems normal
for me. I have records for two other ascensions, and they lasted 99,000
and 78,000 turns, despite not having any special conducts.

The early game was by far the hardest. I wanted to advance my pickaxe
skill, so I used that, but it was a poor weapon. It was a long time
before I replaced my armor and my pickaxe. I went to the mines first,
hoping to improve these, but my pet died quickly, and I didn't want to
kill peaceful dwarves. I stopped around minetown, after getting a bit
of protection, and I went to sokoban. Long story short, I had a lot of
trouble with unicorns, found some dwarvish mithril, and killed a
hostile dwarf for his mattock. Sokoban had an amulet of reflection. At
this point, I fought stuff in minetown for a bit, then continued below
it. Bad move. After the third poly-trap, I gave up, and I headed back
to find new armor. The most important things I lost were my pride and
my cloak of protection.

I continued deep into the dungeon. The big thing here was the bones
file I found. The change couldn't have been more dramatic. This was
when the hard times ended. I went from a under-armored and wimpy human
to a wimpy human with a +4 Hawaiian shirt, a +4 SDSM, and a +5 cloak of
magic resistance, among other goodies. Praise the dev-team for scrolls
of remove curse. The bones file, by the way, was from a level 24 wizard
who choked on an iguana while preparing for the ascension run. I don't
know what possessed me to eat it, but I did. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
That, by the way, is how I have lost two of my three characters who
died past the castle.

I returned to the mines, and got the luckstone. Once I got my level
high enough, I did the quest. It was easy. The orb was nice, but heavy.

Some time around here, I went on a 10,000 turn sac fest, thanks to my
amulet of slow digestion, but I never got Grayswandir. For that matter,
all I got was dragonbane, or something equally useless. Grr. I had six
artifacts at this time, but I still expected better. I gave up and kept
fighting with my +0 dwarvish mattock. I think I cleared the castle with
this, but I don't quite remember. In any case, I finally got
Grayswandir. I read my one blessed scroll of enchant weapon, and got it
to +3. The mattock went into the Bag of Holding I had found.
While I'm not sure when I had found my bag of holding, my magic lamp,
or my jumping boots, I did find them at some point. Oh, and I took
Magicbane off that dead wizard.
Later, after I started #twoweaponing, I wrote some scrolls of enchant
armor and enchant weapon. These pushed the sabers up to +7 each and my
armor up to something quite nice.

I dug out Genhemon as I went. The demon lords were easy. Geryon and
Yeenoghu showed up at some point, but were no trouble. I fought liches
in melee (38 of all types by the end of the game) and my incredible
firepower was enough to kill them quickly. Disenchanters were killed
with a combination of daggers and the mattock. Mind Flayers were killed
in melee with Elbereth.

I collected gold as I went, and gave it to the priest in the Valley of
the Dead. As I was high level and rising somewhat, it was difficult to
find enough gold to complete the last few points of protection, but I
did it. I finally got my naked armor class to 1 and got my AC to -38. I
found a helmet of brilliance at some point, and enchanted it. I danced
with an incubus for the last few levels, then I drank the last potion
of gain level to get some more hit points. At this point, I had maybe
300, despite not having nurse danced (a master lich once scared me out
of that habit).
My stupidest move in this game was jumping out of a beartrap. Well, at
least I know not to now.

I descended and marked the vibrating square. I left the invocation
artifacts there, and went to fight Rodney. I only had one known wand of
death and one more I had forgotten about, so I killed him in melee to
save the charges.

I took the book and ran. This time, I did not forget any of the
necessary pieces. I remembered the invocation and descended into the
sanctum. I fought my way through here. Rodney appeared going in, and
double troubled as I was in a hall. I fought him, but it seemed I
wasn't getting anywhere. The horde of monsters was too great, and I
think he double troubled again once I killed one of him. I tried twice
to kill him with a wand of death, but missed both times. I gave up, and
finally killed him. I broke through, ignoring monsters now, and used
the bell of opening to find the door. There, I found that the priest
was dead, and there was no amulet. I remembered hearing about this sort
of thing, and I remembered seeing an amulet, which I thought was fake.
I found it and tested it with my bag of holding, though, and it wasn't
so I quiffed a potion of gain level and ran. The mysterious force was
nasty, but I got out of hell eventually.

I forgot to grab my large stash of k-rations, and was too far gone when
I remembered them. I did remember to dart down to minetown and grab the
best out of that set of gems I had left there.

There wasn't really anything to report until Astral. Famine was coming
at me already, and I really didn't want to face him. I went in the
opposite direction. I tried keeping my guardian angel for a while, but
couldn't stand it and put on my ring of conflict. That and free action
are my standard Astral gear. I enjoyed it much more, as I chopped my
way through the first room. I let Death come to me and killed him on
the first blow. Then it was on to the altar. In a fortunate change from
my previous games, where I visited all three altars before finding the
right one, this first altar was co-aligned. I sacrificed the Amulet of
Yendor.

It was not until after the game, when I was looking over my inventory,
that I realized I had been wearing my oilskin cloak from the plane of
water instead of my cloak of magic resistance. I guess there was
nothing on astral that could steal the orb, so it wasn't a problem, but
it was scary to see that. Besides, it's a difference of 5AC; I should
have worn the CoMR.
