1 7177658 tztuomin-Val-Dwa-Fem-Law (Poly-Art) ascended to
demigoddess-hood. 234 [376]
First Slash'EM ascension for me, and actually my first Slash'EM character
who made it past dungeon level 8. I've been playing Slash'EM for a couple of
weeks after getting bored in Nethack's Gehennom.

The early game got easy when I found a pair of speed boots in a shop at
level 3. I guess speed is even more important in Slash'EM as it is in
Nethack, perhaps next time I get an early wish I'll wish for speed boots
instead of a GDSM or a SDSM.
I got no wishes before reaching the castle, but managed to find one
coaligned altar (the one in minetown was not) and after finding a wand of
create monster I went to zap, kill and offer. Got Sunsword, Spear of Light,
Sword of Justice and Mjollnir. I also got nice pets every now and then,
monadic devas and such, but managed to lose them often. I stashed the other
weapons away and wielded Mjollnir and a +5 silver saber. Two-handed combat
proved to be quite effective.
Midgame was pretty easy due to my strong pets, but I did have difficulty
finding decent armor. I wore an elven mithril coat until I reached the
Castle, where I met and killed a gray dragon and got my scale mail that way.
I did the neutral and chaotic quests. I tried to do the lawful quest as well
but could not find my way anywhere so I backed out. Was supposed to go back
but forgot. I also found a lot of very nice special levels. I did not go
look for Fort Ludios, as I decided early on that I would not try to carry
any money around. I did have to go look for money at some point because I
lost my protection (stupidly offered a dwarf) and had to pay a priest again.
My pets killed most of the shopkeepers so the money was easy to find. After
I had paid the minetown priest 3 times for protection (for the second time),
my pets killed him too and I got my money back. I went and spent it at
One-Eyed Sam's Black Market.
I had three mishaps:
1) Losing the protection by offering a dwarf
2) Taking a dip in River Lethe - it turned my 15 potions of holy water into
potions of amnesia and did all kinds of other damage
3) Losing telepathy in Gehennom by killing a gypsy
After mishap number two I had to go all the way upstairs to the only
altar in the main dungeon - I had no holy water left and could of course not
go to Gehennom without any.
Gehennom was very nice, not that many mazes, many special levels, not that
much trouble. The big baddies did not give me much trouble. I was carrying
the Hand of Vecna which means that I was regenerating pretty quickly, I
guess. I spent some time looking for the vibrating square at the bottom
level (it was under some stuff) and then went to kill rodneY. I had saved a
couple of wands of death for him and they managed to do the job quite
nicely. After that, I went to grab the amulet and then ran all the way
upstairs with two of my faithful pets. I did not get teleported back once
(does that not happen in Slash'EM or was it perhaps something I carried?) I
found the last thing I was missing on my way up - a ring of free action -
and went to the planes. Earth and fire were easy, and the plane of air was
quite okay. My pets met their deaths somewhere on the plane of air, though.
I spent a while in the air bubble on the plane of water and then stepped on
the portal without even seeing it first. Astral plane was unbelievably easy:
there was only Pestilence between me and the nearest altar, which proved to
be the right one. I zapped him a couple of times with my wand of death,
teleported bunches of other critters out of the way, and went to offer the
Amulet. The choir sang, yadda yadda.
Whee, that was fun. Although I did play this character in quite the same way
as I would've played a Nethack valkyrie. Perhaps next I will examine the new
stuff more, or even choose a new character type. (The husband's playing a
Yeoman at the moment, trying to get his first Slash'EM ascension done on the
same week as I.)
Tuuli.
