[If anyone is wondering, this leads on from the Monk Advice thread from
earlier this week.]

This was my second ever ascension (first was Tourist). I'd been
practicing monks, trying to get the hang of their idiosyncratic style
of play. Then I got one that was unnaturally good.

Notable challenges:
Polypileless: well, I don't see this as a challenge, especially since I
only found one /oP during the game. I've never enjoyed polypiling, it
has too low a return on effort.
Genoless: This is a completely different kettle of fish. I've never had
to deal with (master) mind flayers or purple L properly before, and
damn, they're annoying as hell. They don't actually do much to your HP,
but they surround you with monsters, and curse all your stuff.
(Vlad's throne actually gave me a genocide, to which I replied "none".)
Body-armorless: This is the only monk-style challenge I kept. I wore
shields, I ate meat, I wielded weapons, but I never put on a suit of
armor. I didn't get reflection til medusa (perseus left his shield
behind), and I didn't get MR til the castle wand, when I wished for a
CoMR. Once I got the Eyes, I put my original robe back on again, but
then once I killed Rodney I got paranoid about losing them and got out
my CoMR instead.

Notable blunders:
* Wishing for the Eye of the Aethiopica as a Chaotic. Doh!
* Wishing for a spellbook of FoD to use against Master Kaen, when the
Eyes give MR. Double Doh!
* Reading a spellbook dug from a grave without checking to see if it
might possibly be cursed. Lost a spellbook of identify that way.
* Not finding the right altar on the astral plane until the FIFTH one I
visited. I started at the left (pestilence), but for some reason didn't
register that it was chaotic. Then I went to the centre (lost about 70
max HP to death in the corridor), then to right (there was a tricky
moment in a doorway when famine was next to me and I quickly wrote a
charging scroll, charged my /oD, and zapped him with it). Then when I
noticed that the one at the right wasn't chaotic, I backtracked again,
to centre (bounding past Death with my jumping boots), and to left.
* Losing the Book of the Dead in a pool in the tower - again. Luckily,
an arch-lich fetched it out for me. Stupidly, I rubber chickened that
arch-lich too, sending both the book and his statue into the water.

I tried looking for a wand of cold to freeze the water. Then I went
downstairs and grabbed a bullwhip from one of the monsters, and went
fishing. (I didn't know that this was possible; I had only just come up
with the idea and wondered if TDTTOE). Unfortunately, the arch-lich
statue was just too big to pull up. Then I suddenly thought to write an
earth scroll, which rescued the book nicely for me.

Interesting times:
* I #untrapped a demilich from a pit in Gehennom. The demilich was
grateful Smile Remeber kids, when you genocide L, you wipe out the nice,
reasonable ones as well as the psychopaths!
* I summoned Yeenoghu on an altar. I was just trying to get him out of
the way so I didn't encounter him in Gehennom. Unfortunately, on the
ascension run, my fast typing hit him, so I had to kill him anyway.
* The mysterious force made me go through Orcus town 3 or 4 times. Bah.
* The plain of earth was easy. I got a spare wand of death here.
* The plain of air was tough. I only had 1 scroll of gold detection (I
didn't see any til well into the ascension run), and I used it here.
The portal was as far away as could be possible. I went through 2
potions of full healing and an amulet of life-saving from the air
elementals.
* The plain of fire was very quick, like 6 or 7 turns
* The plain of water was dull. I stayed in my bubble and killed water
elementals until I'd been round the screen once. Then I tried crossing
to another bubble. Finally I bumbled into the portal.
* Big thanks to whoever suggested keeping a wand of secret door
detection for the sanctum, and to levelport down there instead of
taking the stairs. I only wish I'd had a cursed potion of gain level to
get me out again...

Conducts woulda looked like this:
You never genocided any monsters.
You never polymorphed an object.
You used 5(?) wishes.

Not such a bad mistake - having the Finger works on lots of other things.

Doing Pestilence first is an... interesting approach.

Those demons will follow you up and down stairs like any other. When I am
Chaotic I dump them in a branch I am finished with.

Very true. But at 61% fail (with robe and no shield) it wasn't good to
rely on. I mostly used it on mind flayers and disenchanters.

I'd only been to the astral plane once before. I had two wands of
death, and I wasn't sure if I had enough food for Famine. So Pestilence
it was. (Pestilence also gave me the least trouble.) What does
pestilence actually do? All I can imagine is he gives you the "Ill"
status.

Good plan. I actually summoned him on the sokoban stairs level, so I
could have dumped him there. It's really annoying how peaceful
teleporting monsters will still follow you around like that.

Famine is equally vulnerable to wands of death.

Pestilence will give you the "Ill" status every time he hits you which
will be fatal in a few moves if untreated and cannot be treated reliably
by unicorn horn.

Famine needs to hit you about seventeen times, if you start just Satiated,
to make you Weak, a status which will be fatal... eventually and can be
treated reliably with a K-ration.

Ah. I had 2 lembas wafers left and wasn't sure if that would be enough, whereas
I knew I could (theoretically) cure illness with my blessed unihorn. That has
always worked with Juiblex's illness and I figured it'd be no different for
Pestilence (although Juiblex has the ridiculously easy /oDig weakness..)

In the end, pestilence never got a hit on me (I think the angels beat him up
once and I /oDed him a couple other times) but famine and death both did. You're
right about famine though, he wasn't half as scary as I thought he'd be.

Each attempt with a unihorn has a chance - a good chance - to cure
illness. Each additional illness hit cuts the time to death dramatically.
Against Jubilex, who is very slow, the odds of the unicorn horn letting
you down are tiny. Against Pestilence, it's a flat-out gamble.
