Post subject: YAAP: Lazy Samurai, no teleports (not a fun conduct)
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>nethack (more info?)

So I have been playing a lot recently (well, for me; 20-30 minutes
a morning on weekdays with occasional evening stints) and doing
conduct games. I recently finished a couple of illiterates (Cav, Val
(also polyless polyselfless genoless)) but when I lost my illit atheist
polyless polyselfless genoless priest at the Castle to serious stupidity,
I decided I wanted something a little bit easier. So I played a Samurai.
The others might be a bit more interesting, but this is the one I
remember, so...

I actually had more trouble in the early game than I expected due to
running into a bunch of bonesfiles. There was a lot of "stand on Elbereth
in a corridor and then fire arrows until they don't hit anything" with
the occasional offensive use of pits. Once I had finished Sokoban (BoH)
and Minetown (magic lamp, used as light source for a while) I proceeded
downward and found a coaligned temple.

I got Snickersnee and Grayswandir within about ten sacrifices. At that
point I said "OK, burning the wish" and conjured up some GDSM --- only
to find a CoMR on a bones just a few levels down. Oh well. I proceeded
downware, found out that that bones contained an amulet of reflection
as well, and then I was pretty much set. To add awesome to awesome, the
Castle provided me with silver dragon scales and a 0:3 wand. It took me
a minute (this was my second or third literate game in months) that I
could actually run the scales into SDSM. I was joyous. I didn't even
bother with the wand.

Grayswandir twoweaponed with a katana is ridiculous. I used my yumi to
take down mind flayers and anything that happened to be near them, but
other than that I just smacked things. I decided to play some sort of
stupid half-conduct since I hadn't yet gotten teleport control, and
never willfully teleport. This isn't a hard conduct, nor is it fun.
Don't do it. The turn counter would be like 35000 without it... not
fast, but the almost 48000 felt like plodding, because it was.

That said, it's not dangerous; I found the VS first (by digging down),
then got the wand of death (for use on Ashikaga), then found Vlad for
the AoLS (also for use on Ashikaga), and then went back to my DL9 altar
stash and accidentally polypiled my wand of death. Oooops. It was OK,
though; I went to the Quest and it was a piece of cake, Ashikaga never
even hit me. I left the Tsurugi in my stash and said "Eh, why don't I just
finish this in the morning."

The next morning I woke up after only a few hours of sleep and slogged
my way down into Gehennom and went after the two Wizard's Towers. I realized
that I had forgotten to dig myself a path, so I did so, and then just
started getting sloppy. A master mind flayer? Elbereth (wand of digging or
maybe an athame) and then melee it. Oh look, I wore away the h! Goodbye,
memories. A disenchanter? Eh, whatever, melee it. Oh wait, stupid. After
I walked into a moat I said "I'm going to die" and hit save.

The next day, I found I had dropped my yumi _somewhere_ while playing
stupidly, and rather than troll Gehennom _again_ (againnom?) I just wished
for one. I think I used the replacement in one fight with a flayer and
that was it. I killed everything in the wizard's zoo and killed the wizard
with trice corpses or melee, saving my one wand of death with three charges
for Astral.

The sanctum got a little sloggy --- somehow everyone and his undead mother
was awake when I got there --- but putting on conflict got me through,
into the temple, and holding the amulet. A quaff and we're off! The
mysterious force hated me from DL50-40, but I think I got from 38 all
the way up with no problems. Going up was mostly uneventful; the wizard
didn't bother me, I stopped at my stash (and forgot to pick up Snickersnee,
the Tsurugi, and the Sting someone deathdropped) and went to DL 1.

I tried to actually play the planes well this time. I used potions of
confusion because I did not have a forgotten spell, and I recommend this,
it worked very well. I sprinted across the planes, as usual turned on color
only for one turn on Fire, and when I got to Astral, used jumping for most
of my moves. Oh, is it wonderful! I killed maybe two monsters! Just hop hop
hop hop hop until I found the right altar. Pestilence took a wand of death
charge, but Famine was killed by conflict if anything, and I got it on the
second altar, so...

Whatever was that for? What reason is there to turn off color? So you can
miss the lava easier? (I understand that you would need at least one turn of
color to quickly identify the portal, right?)

Yes, I need the one turn to figure out which portal to use. I've tried
playing with color, but find it really distracting because I learned to
play with color off; I think playing with color is superior but it messes
with my head and I am resistant to change.

I do find that, sometimes, having color on leads to lack of contrast in
irritating ways --- my eye is drawn to the redness of a square rather
than whether it is lava or a monster. I expect that would go away if I
played with color for long enough though. And I miss it when playing
on the Valkyrie Quest, and usually don't freeze Medusa water for fear of
accidentally melting it later; I should really find a way to make ice be
a different character than the floor. (Also, incidentally, setting ghosts
and shades to 7 is awesome.)

I play without color, too. I use vt100 when playing on NAO. On
localhost, the first thing I did after installing nethack was to create
~/.nethackrc just so I can turn off color. I find color very
distracting, and it clashes badly with my choice of terminal background
color, so I just don't bother. Besides, I've grown up playing nethack on
B&W. Smile
