Without using my final two wishes, I did ascend that Valkyrie. This is
my first ascension not using the tiles (instead using the console
version), first ascension since coming back to nethack after almost two
years off, and third ascension overall (both previous were Valks). Time,
I think, to move on to a different class. (Which, of course, was the
idea until I got sick of dying as wizards/tourists and decided to play "a
short valkyrie game...")

The details:

The start of the game was fairly common Valk bash-and-grab. Then one of
the wands in Sokoban turned out to be a wand of wishing. I stared in
surprise when engrave-ID'ing tells me "You may wish for an object." The
wand was 0:3, too. I got 2 scrolls of charging out of the deal and
finished Soko to see what it would give me. Once I saw the amulet level,
I wished up an AK fitting that; GDSM and a Cloak of Protection, Speed
Boots, and GoPower. Found a helm of brilliance just lying on the ground
in the mines, and a tourist bones provided a Hawaiian shirt. Enchanted
the armor a bit.

Made a lot of trips back and forth to minetown buying protection and sac-
festing (lawful altar). Got Mjollnir, had Excalibur already. On the
last trip I accidentally angered the watch, and the watch-captain
provided me with a silver saber. I enchanted it up (had to redo after
meeting a Disenchanter) and twoweaponed it and Excalibur most of the game.

Found a ring of conflict and a ring of levitation. ID'd most of my stash
with blessed identify. Wished up a ring of free action, a magic marker,
and scrolls of genocide, reverse-geno'd nurses. Having unholy water and
holy water made my life a lot easier. Got rid of L and h, then ;, though
next time I think I'll leave ; and get rid of Disenchanters/
Rustmonsters. Tamed a grey dragon at the castle.

Between nurse dancing and blessed *healing, I was up to nearly 300HP
before waking Rodney. I also dug out the paths and marked the Vibrating
Square before waking him, and quaffed some Gain Level, getting me up to
XP 19 and HP 304. Woke Rodney, instadeath'd him with Orcus's wand.
Another random enemy, I think a demon, provided me with a second wand of
death.

Dragon ate a chameleon corpse, became a feline of some type; forget which
now. Found a poly-trap and whistled her back to being a dragon -- red
this time. In the sanctum, she died fairly quickly, but I didn't see
what did it. Cursed Gain level after getting the amulet, naming
it,checking it. Mysterious Force didn't bother me until I got up about
seven levels, and I got it twice in a row and had to repeat most of
Gehennom. I was not pleased.

The run after escaping the Valley of the Dead was easy. Rodney only
bothered me twice in the dungeon proper; once at Medusa, once around
Dlvl8. the Medusa time, he took a few shots -- the wand missed him --
that nearly killed me on Astral.

The planes were easy -- XyZZy's suggestion of forgotten spells plus ?oGD
made them a cinch. Rested once in a steam vortex on air when my HP got
low on air. Levitated across water to the general area of the portal and
found the bubble easily. On Astral, Pestilence was to my immediate left,
so I went that way first. /oD'd him, the altar wasn't right. On my way
out, he got close to me, and both /oD were drained. I was losing HP fast
(got down to 142 even with the blessed unihorn).

Desperation, I zapped Pestilence with a /oTele and recharged the wands.
Ate a blessed tin of nurse I made in Hell. Went up the middle, where
Death was. Teleported him away once, then just killed him. When I got
in the middle temple, a giant went to flee...

So I sac'd the amulet:

It takes a while to get used to doing something other than Valk Smash!
in the early game.

In the future, consider jumping boots over speed boots. There are
decent arguments for both, I myself prefer jumping by a fair margin
(especially in the late game). The GoPower aren't worth a wish, IMO,
especially for a human valk who's going to get strength maxed or close
to it early on (and who likely has decent strength to begin with).
Given that you're pre-Castle (so there's another wand coming up), I'd
have gone ?charging, GDSM, jumping boots, and a marker (assuming I'd
found ?enchant weapon or ?enchant armor), leaving 2 + wrest wishes for
emergencies and filling in what's missing in a few levels (conflict
and telecontrol being possible wish targets before too long). Either
that substitute SDSM + CoMR and have 1+wrest, keeping the amulet slot
free for ESP or life saving.

Yes: Once you kill him he will revive and come after you while you're
trying to deal with Death and/or Famine. Two-three riders on your tail
at once, with one of them having a fatal disease attack, is Not Fun.
Personally I go for Famine first (preferably after satiating my
stomach), then Death, and finally Pestilence.

BTW you were also *very lucky* that zapping them with teleport wand
worked; at least in the latest vanilla version, most times this will
just teleport them right next to you.

Congratulations on your ascension Smile

Well, I ruled Death out because of his immunity to death-rays. I think
my thought process was "blessed unihorn is out, might as well go there."
I was expecting something similar to Juiblex's attacks, without the
engulfing, which is sort of what I got only much more HP-depleting.

Is there any reason not to do Pestilence first? I guess this shows my
inexperience with Astral.

But don't they all come back from the dead, so if it ends up being the
third, you end up with all three anyway? Or am I way off-base?

I'm aware; I'd read that much about the riders. I only tried because
they were already right next to me, so at worst I wasted a turn, but at
best I got a breather long enough to recharge the /oDeath for Pestilence
and to think for Death.

Death wasn't nearly as scary as I expected. It had been so long since
going to Astral that I'd forgotten almost everything about it, and I
don't think I was nearly as prepared before as this time... so I was
expecting a lot worse and did some silly things.

Of the ascensions for which I have records, 3 have fewer than 2,000 kills,
and a few more are in the low two thousands. So not that unusual.

Yes, but the one you take first is after you the longest. Many rank the
relative danger of the rider's attacks as Pestilence, then Death, then Famine,
in descending order, so they take Pesty last.

That wasted turn is far more valuable than you seem to think. I'll only zap
the riders with /oTele when most other adjacent positions they could end up
would open up a convenient flight path for jumping away.

You have to be dawdling to get the others on your tail anyway;
normally it's not an issue, though I have had 2 attacking me once or
twice. But you do have to go past the ones at the wrong altars twice
(once on the way there and once on the return) so by doing Pestilence
last you only face him 1/3 of the time (when he's at the right altar)
instead of twice at the wrong altar.

Famine's special attack is a joke and he is vulnerable to death rays.
Pestilence is vulnerable to death rays, but his special attack is very
dangerous; Death is invulnerable to death rays, but her special attack is
only moderately dangerous. Hence, Famine first.

On my second ascension, I the right altar was the *fifth* one I
checked... somehow I missed that the first one I checked was correct. I
went for Pestilence first, so I had to get past him three times. Still,
I got through!
