I'd been chronicling this game a bit in the "Ink shortage and pet
advice" thread. So now I see why many extinctionist posts have said
"never again"... after a month of playing on and off, I just didn't
have the patience anymore. I only managed to extinct 19 species. But I
did achieve certain goals:
- First score over 10 million points
- Learned every spell, and all at 0% failure
- HP and power over 1000 (HP is trivially easy to increase with
alchemy though)
- AC below -50 (despite losing 13 points of protection in an early
prayer accident)
- Ascended with pet (flying on my ki-rin)
And other more trivial things:
- Made a bunch of +8 elven daggers (though didn't end up using them)
- Got one piece of armor enchanted to +7 (small shield)
- Got over 100 dilithium, plus many other gems but couldn't carry
everything
More amusements:
- I had two Archons for much of the late game, and managed to get one
all the way to Astral. Then I got confused by an umber hulk and
accidentally decapitated poor Archie just before getting to the right
altar. He had an AoLS but was in no mood to talk to me when he came
back to life.
- After easily avoiding mind flayers for nearly the entire (genoless)
game I got flayed twice on Astral. I wasn't using conflict (until my
Archon died) and was Burdened, which certainly contributed.
Fortunately I didn't forget anything important.

Which is why is you are already doing polypiling, you can make several
piles of +7 (or even + elvish items, then polypile them into items
you want to wear. Elvin boots and cloaks count as 'magic' armor, and
are ideal polypile fodder, suitable for that +7 Helm of Brilliance or
that +8 gauntlets of dexterity that you've always wanted. You'll
never get DSM through polypiling, but all the rest of your armor can
be obtained at +7 or above if you want to go nuts with elvin armor
polypiling.
Congrats on the ascension.
By the way -
If you REALLY wanted to get an extinctionist ascension, you could have
done so with minimal effort on the 'Fort Ludios level, by letting your
pets do all the killing and a Titan do almost all of the monster
creation. Adequate preparation could insure that nearly all of the
loot remains untouched so you can have a massive polyfest afterwards.
Just put on your ring of slow digestion, satiate yourself on a giant
hunk of meat, and do a "n6543." command to wait thousands of turns
while your pets do all the work. Then eat a couple of C or K rations
and wait some more. >> Stay informed about: YAAP: Funcrunch-Wiz-Gno-Fem-Neu, genoless, artiwishless (N.. |

Did you check the three levels below it with 'Detect Treasure' ?
I don't think falling through a trapdoor can destroy an icebox.

I considered this, but it wasn't important to me that my entire kit be
at +7 or above, so I was just playing around with expendable T-shirts
and small shields (and enjoying reading all the different T-shirt
messages). I'm sure I could have done things more efficiently though.

Fort Ludios was not generated in my game, but that's an interesting
idea. I wanted to camp at an altar though so I could sacrifice (to
reduce prayer timeout so I could pray more often for spellbooks and
protection) and B/U/C ID during summoning.

As a wizard, the bottom level of the quest is an acceptable place for
a summoner induced sacfest. It's not perfect, because the level is
teleport-allowed, and monsters can leave the level via cursed
teleportation or gain level, and 'create monster' will not create most
monster types ( although summon nasty will work as expected). >> Stay informed about: YAAP: Funcrunch-Wiz-Gno-Fem-Neu, genoless, artiwishless (N.. |

True, but not so good for extinctionist purposes as quest monsters are
exempt from extinction, from what I've read. In this game, I was lucky
enough to have an altar generated on level 24, just before Medusa -
actually *three* altars on that level, with many more scattered
throughout the dungeon. I did my sacfest there so I could summon the
toughest monsters without having to descend into Gehennom (and thus be
unable to pray for goodies, unless I stayed in Vlad's).

I have this neutral wizard who's done the castle and is pudding farming
for wishes so that she can have all artifacts. She's missing two
wishable quest artifacts and she hasn't sacced anything. The plan is as
follows:
1. Succesfully wish all but own quest artifacts.
2. Do the quest and sacc at the end altar for all neutral and unaligned
artifacts.
3. Convert to lawful using HoOA, gain piety, create Excalibur, convert
the quest end altar, sacc for all lawful artifacts and bag all lawful
inteligent artifacts.
4. Convert to chaotic using HoOa, gain piety, create Sting and Orcrist,
convert the quest end altar, sac for all chaotic artifacts and bag all
chaotic intelligent artifacts.
5. Remove the HoOA, gain piety, convert the quest end altar, sacc and
pray for protection.
6. Do the Gehennom etc.
I'm at 1. with Long Bow of Dianna and Master Key of Thievery still to
get. Last 10 wishes haven't worked so I'll have still long way to go. I
found the staff of eucalyptus from a bones pile, but no artifact weapons
have been generated yet. I haven't visited the quest nor Ludios, but
have done the dungeon down to the Castle, Sokoban and to the Mine's End.
After I get all quest artifacts I will do Ludios before the Quest so
that there is a chance that some artifact weapons are generated there. I
might do the Gehennom also before the quest for the same reason. If any
would be generated those would lessen the saccfest(s) I need to do.
Topi 'Am I crazy or crazy?' Linkala
P.S. The main reason to use the quest end altar is that more monsters
will always be generated in the Quest.

Yes, Quest monster generation does not respect extinction.
But let me clarify what I was suggesting:
A no-input-required method of letting a summoner create tens of
thousands of nasties - with no risk to you, letting your pet army -
consisting of Archons and purple worms - slaughter everything with no
input required, and coming through afterward to collect the death
drops and harvest the polyfodder. Note that there is a risk that an
Umber hulk could confuse your worms and trick them into killing your
Archons.
Playing an extinctionist is generally extremely boring - casting
'create monster' like crazy, and letting your pets kill everything.
As you noted earlier, sacrificing most of the kills will give you the
following benefits: artifact gifts, divine protection, HP boosts, and
piles of spellbooks. But really, it isn't worth the extra boredom, at
least for most of the game. The HP boosts can be MUCH more easily
obtained through alchemy, the spells can easily be obtained through
polypiling.
The major benefit of conducting a sacfest that you generally can't get
through a summoner-induced slaughter is the -128 AC that you might
want. That is usually obtained through pudding farming, rather than
'create monster' >> Stay informed about: YAAP: Funcrunch-Wiz-Gno-Fem-Neu, genoless, artiwishless (N.. |
