I was having good fun with my chaotic elf wizard last night. The wizard
was generated with a ring of polymorph control. Great I thought, now all
I have to do is find a wand or ring of polymorph and I've got it made.
Sure enough, on lvl 3 was a large ring shop where I found a ring of
polymorph. I figured I'd pick up the entire contents of the ring shop,
don the ring, polymorph into a MMF and kill the storekeeper.
Unfortunately, after waiting a few thousand turns it never happened. So
I went down a few levels, got the required funds, came back, and paid
for the ring. One level later I got the opportunity to change shape and
did. I went back, killed the shopkeeper, and took possession of the
contents of the store.
There were stores on two other levels - an armor shop and a general
store. I killed those storekeepers, too, since I had id'ed a scroll of
identify and wasn't worried about store ids.
Now I had about 7000gp. I figured I'd go down the mines, eat the brains
of any gnomes and dwarves I encountered, get even more gold from the
foolish storekeepers on minetown, and do the protection racket. I was
level 8 by that time.
A bookstore was on the minetown level. I promptly killed the proprietor
and took his possessions. Naturally, I felt compelled to read the books.
Compelled, until after trying to read one I got the message "you notice
you have no gold!" Ouch - I had around 13,000gp! The only people left on
the level were Izchak and the priest. I had determined that I was going
to leave them alone.
I went back to the regular dungeon and found an altar dedicated to
Thoth. Good deal, I figured, and decided to convert it. Unfortunately,
Anhur was royally pissed at me for killing all those storekeepers and
guards. Before I knew it, I was neutral. I had to sacrifice a bunch more
to get into Thoth's good graces.
The big problem, though, was the fact that I was level 10 or so and
hadn't gone past level 5 of the regular dungeon. Every single level was
a pain. The shopkeepers were going to have the last laugh after all.
I tried to sacrifice to get magicbane and got Giantslayer instead - that
told me that Magicbane had already been generated somewhere. But where?
I wondered if it was in a bones file somewhere lower down. So I decended
and finally got killed off by a xan and a winged gargoyle on level 16.
Yes, it was an annoying death, but I got a kick out of it when the list
of monsters killed listed *6* shopkeepers! >> Stay informed about: YAAD |

You sense the presence of spoilers.--More--
Your game was lost at that point, because you cannot get the Bell of Opening
if you've converted.

Reading unblessed spellbooks may be a risk, but a calculable risk. A
book's base price is level*100, and your chance of succesfully reading an
uncursed spellbook depends only on your experience level and the spell's
level (assuming fixed INT).

Shopkeepers are very valuable for price-identifying. With the money that
you lost, you could have bought several points of AC, which might have
saved you later on.
