My priest (the one who became a silver dragon at one time), died because of
a Master Lich that somehow appeared on dungeon-lvl 9. Must have been a
polymorph trap. It cursed my inventory, destroyed my speed-boots and
summoned all kinds of nasties. I had teleport control, but no teleportitis,
so I couldn't escape. I zapped a wand of death at it (which I happened to
find on a random enemy some time ago), but it didn't work. Nor did a wand
of polymorph. And all the beams of magic missile I sent at it didn't seem
to make much of a scratch. I was out of turns, and I was killed by the
group of nasties.
There goes my best priest yet.
I've once ascended with a samurai. Since then I've tried wizards, monks and
priests, but I always die by being overpowered by the enemy. I'm not sure
how I could have prevented this death.

The first counteraction would have been to engrave the E-word; I guess
that would have nullified most of the threat. Then, liches are undead,
so a wand of death won't be effective. Since the E-word will have scared
most monsters you could have used the wand of death for the toughest
summoned ones, especially minotauri who don't respect the E-word. That
all, of course, still leaves the necessity to escape the place somehow.
Didn't you have, e.g., a wand of digging, no scroll of teleportation?
Too bad, but that happens. Better luck with your next game!

I didn't have any means of engraving or teleportation. I did, however, have
a wand of digging and a pickaxe, and it never occurred to me to use either
of them.
I'll take more time to think it over next time. I'm still too impulsive in
this game. By the way, I should have had a scroll of teleportation on me,
but I didn't. No idea where it went. Must have left it at the stash.

We live and learn Umm.. - hopefully
But consider that pickaxing would require too much time and would surely
obliterate any engraving, so use the instantly effective wand of digging.

Of course, this means you did have a means of engraving, as you can
engrave Elbereth in one turn with a wand of digging. The result will
erode over time, and you might well have been better off digging your
way out of trouble, but still. If you happen to know that there are
nasties on the level below as well, engraving E in a corridor, dropping
a gold piece on it, and running might buy you the time you need.

Though, a master lich is capable of teleporting adjacent to you, and
summon storms may be generated from some distance, too; so it still
requires some problem management skill.
