Xbox sound problem

its hooked up to the tv, it has surround and something called, stable sound.
both are off, i tried a game with stable sound on and no difference,
same with surround sound.

OK, so first thing, check the settings on the Xbox itself:

1) Turn on the Xbox console without a disc in the disc tray.
2) From the main menu, select Settings, and then select Audio.
3) Turn off anything that says digital. Since you're using the red and
white audio to connect directly to the TV it shouldn't matter, but
better safe than sorry.

only setting mine has is, mono, stereo and surround.
it was and still is set on stereo.
