Xbox Live: Card activation + expiration

Maybe it's just the Xbox Live mess over this weekend - 4/5/08 -
but I have a 12+1 month card that I received last xmas,
and just now need to use it to extend my ongoing subscription.
I tried last night - and it failed - (maybe just the XBL mess ?)
Do these cards ever expire if not used ?
I mean, what if I get it for a present,
but don't need it for months ?

I had the same trouble last night. Live's current status is "up and
running" so hopefully card redemption works now.
