I have one of the first 360s without hdmi, I want to get a new one with an
hdmi port so I can play some of the games in 1080p.
It seems the cheapest way is to get a new Arcade 360, that has an HDMI port.
Can I just take off my hard drive to my current one and put it on that one
to use?
Also, does the HDMI just use any standard hdmi cable? Its not a particular
one from xbox I have to get is it? >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

What, and deny MS it's accessory profits... LOL! Of course you have to
buy a special HDMI cable that plugs into a 360. MS wouldn't have it
any other way.
As for buying a 360 "Arcade" console, yeah you can switch the hard
drives with no problems. Though you can do 1080P through component
cables, so it's not necessary to upgrade your 360 just for the HDMI
output to get 1080P res.
But if you really want a whole new console, I would suggest the Pro
(Premium) models. Most have the newer Ben-Q DVD-Drives (less likely to
fail), heatsinks (less likely to overheat and get RROD), and Falcon
boards(less likely to overheat and get RROD), plus you'll get another
HardDrive to use. These improvements would mean there'd be much less
of a chance you'd have to send your 360 to MS to get repaired and then
get sent back a mystery console in return. So if you can spare the
extra $70, it's definitely worth it IMHO. >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

Yeah, I forgot about that. VGA or component could work, but your TV
has to support it of course. >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

Another quick question,
While doing a little research online, I found this under the pro version.
"Powerful hardware features 512MB unified memory, custom symmetrical
tripe-core CPU and custom 500MHz ATI graphics processor "
And this under the arcade version.
"Powerful hardware features a custom symmetrical triple-core CPU and custom
500MHz ATI graphics processor "
Does that mean there is no 512 unified memory? Or is that in the hard drive
that I will be putting on it from my old Xbox 360?

Well, Doug gave you more correct answers then I did with all this, but
I think I can still answer this one with 100% accuracy.
Both systems have 512mb of unified memory, and couldn't function
without it. It's built into the system and is *not* on the hard drive. >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

Yes, although any downloadable content you've bought (games, add-ons) will
now require you to be logged into Live in order to use them.
> Also, does the HDMI just use any standard hdmi cable? Its not a particular

A standard HDMI cable is fine. However, if you want to also connect your 360
to your surround sound system, then you'll want to buy the Microsoft 360
HDMI cable which includes a breakout for the optical audio cable on the
360-side of the connector.
However if your TV is like mine, and offers an optical audio out, then you
can just use a standard HDMI cable, then connect your TV to your surround
system. When you want surround, tell the TV to use the optical audio
output, turn on your surround system to the proper input, and voila.

Thanks for the tips, my TV does not support 1080P over component, I wish it
did, it would be a lot easier on me...
Now, for digital sound, I have a fiber optic cable that goes to a stand
alone receiver. So I would need the Xbox hdmi cable with the fiber optic
break off then?

You only need the Microsoft 360 HDMI cable if you need the optical audio
breakout. Otherwise, a standard HDMI cable works just fine.

My TV won't support 1080p over component. It requires you to use HDMI for
that. If his TV does support 1080 over component, then yes he doesn't
need a new console.

My 360 Arcade has these things. Just make sure the manufacture date is
after 8/26/07, and the Batch # is 734 or higher.

If your TV takes 1080p through compnent. Mine only does through HDMI and VGA
but not compnent. Why? Cause Sony sux balls and must maintain"Full HD"
bullshit.

Or if you receiver has HDMI inputs/outputs (as does mine) then it will take
the video and audio through just one HDMI cable.

Thank you everyone for your tips and info. I did get the Arcade version
today, put the hard drive and HD DVD player on it and it worked just fine.
I bought the Xbox 360 hdmi cable and hooked it up and have 1080p and digital
sound. I only had fiber optic cables for sound, my receiver doesn't have
HDMI, so I had to stick with fiber optic. But it all worked out. I hooked
my old Xbox 360 up in my bedroom (where I have a smaller 30 inch 1080i set).
I will just get a new hard drive one day in the future.

Yea, they sell the 20gb on Ebay for around $20 or less... so you
shouldn't have any trouble finding one cheap for it. >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

Hi,
I take it that you already have the Component AV Pack cable?
If so, there is another option of how you can use a standard HDMI (buy from
monoprice.com) cable, while still getting the digital audio out from the
Component AV Pack; simply have both connected at the same time. All you
need to do is just dremel/sand the bottom of the Component AV Pack until you
are able to get the HDMI cable connected. The HDMI port is directly
underneath the AV port. It is so close that one can cynically speculate
that MS did this, along with making the plastic so thick underneath the AV
pack, in order to force the purchasing of their HDMI packs... >> Stay informed about: Xbox 360 upgrade question |

I don't know about cynicism, but at least on the original XBox, the
component connector with the breakout was so large and heavy, it had these
little plastic legs so that it would sit on the table, instead of sagging,
and possibly falling out.
Now why Microsoft didn't go with Sony's system of having separate ports
for optical audio, HDMI, and Sony AV cables is beyond me.
