I got to admit I wasn't playing MAME a lot in the last time. But then
people emailed me because of my MAME page and suggested games (I just
added Popeye today, how could I not have this?).
So my Linux got quite a lot updates concerning the X server. When I tried
to play Popeye for instance I cannot use the SDL mode (as on all vector
games and a few matrix games too). Usually no problem, I can force not to
use it.
The game starts then, but pressing "5" to insert a coin crashes MAME and
X along with it. Worse, when the X server comes back, and I hit a key,
all messes up and I lose control over the keyboard.
I usually was calling my neighbor if he was there, going over there with
beer if he was there and remotely logged in to my computer to smoothly
shut it down. Of course I could save on beer and just hit the power off
button.
Now, as this happened too often (and beer is not really cheap I
allowed the CTRL-ALT-DEL combination to get a smooth shut reboot.
I just wonder if other Linux fellows experience the same problem since
may be a month or two?
Graphic card is an old ATI Rage Pro (r128 driver). OS is Debian/Lenny.

Have you tried SDLMame? >> Stay informed about: XMAME crashes along with X |

No. I don't have much space on my HD. Is it likely it would solve the
problem if I install it?

Well it is certainly more up-to date and stable than XMame (in my
experience).
The install shouldn't be too big either.
Actually thinking about it, it is probably your X server install that is
the problem but it is worth trying SDLMame anyway. >> Stay informed about: XMAME crashes along with X |

I did now. Besides I have no sound (something with the SDL sound plugin I
seem not to have, messed up audio here anyway), it's slower and the image
not so smooth anymore (used some -vidmod 1 with the x11 version before
which I deinstalled), X seems NOT to crash anymore.

In the meanwhile I have sound working. It's distorted and makes all
slow. Without sound I get about 100% at frame skip 8 on most of the old
classics.
But X crashed anyway. I might go back to x11 MAME then...

As mentioned I isnatlled it, not help, was even slower, so I deinstalled
it again.
Back to xmame.x11 I mentioned that to MCR in a chat and he told me to
reduce the "vectorres". On my slow system I now can play all vector
games again and it's not crashing anymore after setting it to 640x400.
Yay, MCR saved the day (also as I have no internet at this time and no
idea what to do but playing MAME !
[Later]
Damn, it though crashed again right after I wrote this.
