Final Fantasy XI online - Error message

New to Google so apologies if this message is in the wrong place. Can
anyone help us please - I bought my son Final Fantasy XI new, wrapped,
from eBay in January, we went through all the registration
paraphernalia and then as soon as he pressed "play" an error message
came up and that was it!

The message said - PlayOnline Viewer Ver.1.16.02:pol.exe Application
Error. The instruction at "0x0214283c" referenced memory at
"0x00000000". The memory could not be "written" - all of which means
absolutely nothing to us!

I contacted the seller who won't do anything as he says no-one else has
had a problem with his games, and I have been in touch with Final
Fantasy's makers 4 times but all their suggestions have met with
failure. My son still can't play the game. Their last suggestion was
that we should uninstall windows and then reinstall choosing the repair
option. I am relatively new to computers, and know even less about
games, so am loathe to do this without knowing if it will do any harm.

So, has anyone "out there" come across this problem? If so, please
please can you tell me how you sorted it out as I am gutted at wasting
money like this, and my son is gutted he can't play the game.
