Post subject: XFX Geforce 6800XTreme Edition - is it OK for flight sims?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>flight-sim (more info?)

Hi

Having put up with a forever crashing old PC I've had enough and about to
build a new PC.

Budget is tight at the mo so just wondered if anyone knows anything about
the XFX Geforce 6800XTreme Edition graphics card?

I don't have an immediate need for SLi for now as AFAIK none of my current
flight can make use of it.

The mobo will be an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with an AMD 4200+ x2.

Cant wait!!

Mostly I use Fly!, DID F22 ADF, MS FS2000

I guess when Vista comes out there'll be a new FS from MS which makes use of
SLi? Does anyone know what's on the cards?

Thanks for any info.

Ian

Should be plenty adequate for flight sims. Good video card for the buck
that's for sure. If you can swing it though, you might want to consider the
new 7900GT. It costs twice as much but it is one kick ass card that will go
well with your CPU. And it will be a good match to throw in another 7900GT
when they drop in price to get your SLI - double the fun.

Not in flight sims thought. Not in anything else for that matter,
really, unless you want to run BF2 at 3000x2000 x16fsaa.

I like the *idea* of buying, say, one 6600GT and adding another later to
improve things. But in reality it makes far more financial sense to buy
a faster card in the first place.

Your point being? Wink

Just kidding. For Falcon 4 and Falcon 4 AF, it is pretty much CPU bound, and
definitely worthwhile to use a dual-core. I would think that LO-MAC would
benefit. Pacific Fighters maybe, but it already runs great at 1600x1200 on
my X800 XT PE.

I would LOVE BF2 at 3200x2400 (double 1600x1200). That game is a blast.

Hiya HockeyTown!

Just letting you know your old TIR2 is still in service here with
me, can't fly without it Wink

Great to hear! I still have my TrackIR 3 Pro in service and love it as well.
Problem is that now that I've gone with a projector setup I haven't found a
good way to mount it.

I am an ATI Bigot so I went with an X1800 XT, prices have come down and you
can find a 256MB version for 299.00 which is what I picked up, a Sapphire
version from Newegg. My X800 XT PE was no slouch but the X1800 adds the
adaptive AA option which really reduces or eliminates alpha texture problems
and shimmering, I am on a new build and have only tested FS2004 as I have a
ton to install yet but it was neat to fly through Hong Kong and see
non-shimmering buildings, I am almost willing to say I have finally achieved
V5 image quality in a modern, fast GPU. <g> Flying through Hong Kong at
1280x960 with 4XFSAA and adaptive on "quality" I was getting FPS in the 40's
and up. I did also upgrade my long in the tooth P4 @3.6 to a dual core
Opteron 165, not a fast CPU at its 1.8 stock speed but I am running it no
problem at 2.46 which puts its performance a bit north of an X2 4800+,
pretty pleased with it.

If by V5 you mean a Voodoo 5500... I confess it gives me a chuckle... as a
long term 3dfx holdout (I still have one in a win98 box I use for glide
games - the wrappers have gotten pretty good, but nothing beats the old
Voodoo 5500). I'm impressed that a modern graphics card is considered top
of the line because it handles AA as well as the venerable old Voodoo...

If ATI has done what Nvidia spent beaucoup bucks to do (and hasn't quite
succeeded) I may have to get an ATI as my next video card

It was ahead of it's time...

Mount the sensor on a shelf or wall behind you, wear the cap backwards
and invert the axes in the TIR config.

Tried that, but the wall is too close to my head so I have to keep my head
in a perfect spot every time and it just won't work. I have limited space in
my area where my projector is, so I can't move my desk forward any more, at
least enough to make a difference. Right now the dot on the hat takes up 25%
of the TIR's window. I'll figure something out.

Anything stopping you from mounting it up the wall behind you a foot or so?
You'd probably have to make yourself a new cap so the dot or LED angles up
toward the sensor but I cant think of any probs if it's calibrated right.
