I see some great posts here about terrific deals people got on games
along the way. There is at least one of us that took a hit learning
about pricing. I was desperate back in 1995 for a 10-Yard Fight
machine. I called a local operator from the phone book and amazingly
he had one. I jumped at it instantly thinking this may be the only
one I would ever see again. I ended up paying $250 for it (black,
converted Glaxian cabinet, generic marquee and all). What a deal!
Looking back he problably threw one together for me in a couple hours
from junk laying around in his shop. I ended going to an auction a
few months later and the same type game in better shape went for $15
and there were at least three there. That hurt a bit.

Probably my first deal.

I bought a Lunar Lander for $350, it turned out about the only good
thing was the cab and PS.
Got it finished and ended up with 1350 into it.

Come to think of it i don't get too many good deals Smile

But I'm in this to learn stuff...

My first deal: a (working) Millipede for $800 plus shipping a couple
of years ago. Shouldn't have paid more than $400 for it.

OTOH, it was for the wife's 40th birthday, and it's paid off in spades
since then. Smile

Either dead Zookeeper ($500) or non working DL II ($850) about 5-6 years
ago. But...I was still very psyched for both. As far as latest
market...I actually paid $500 for a non working Galaga about 2 years ago.
Damn auction jitters!

I don't really have a "worst" deal, but the most I ever paid for a vid
was $1000 for an extremely near-mint Robotron in 1997.

between 1995-now, my average price was somewhere around 450/game in
various working states.

First purchase was in 1993: $400 for a B+ working all the way pac-man.
I still consider that to be my best purchase, 18 games later.

My worst deal was definitely my first, the sale that "never was".

I had seen a post for a non-working Baby Pac-Man up in New York for
$500 (overpriced) though I had trouble coordinating a buddy's pickup
to go get the game. It took a few weeks to line up transportation,
which I thought we had agreed upon and made clear before I gave him my
money. His patience ran out right before the weekend I had planned to
take it off his hands, he had auctioned it off on eBay and only got
$300 for it, which he gave to me and wrote off the other two hundred
as "storage expense".

This was long before I discovered NAVL (which would have been a God-
send at that time) and before I began hunting for "fixer uppers"
instead of being naieve enough to think I had to purchase a working
game only.

My worst deal was a rash sale.

I had a B+ Sinistar that I had taken down to CA Extreme, and it had lost
sound on the way. I was frustrated with it, and while I was futzing with
it trying to get the sound to work, a guy came up to me and asked what was
wrong with it. I told him about the sound going out, and he asked if I
wanted to sell it and how much I wanted for it. Without thinking about
it, I said "$200", and there was a stunned look on his face, and then
a cracking sound as his hand nearly broke mach 1 to pull out his wallet.

I still miss that game....

Considering the fact that I have been tinkering with this hobby for 15
years and haven't turned a profit on a game yet, I would have to
aggree with bob. They're all usually bad deals. They cost too much
to buy, cost too much to fix, take too much time to fix, and usually
won't sell for what you paid for them let alone what you have in
them. Thank goodness I don't do it for the money. Come to thank
about it, why do I do it for anyways.

Anywho, can't say the worse deal cause I kind of bought it off a
fellow rgvac'r. But worst hosing I ever had was a 25" cut corner
Dynamo HS-5 sporting a Time Killers pcb from a local Tilt for
500+tax. That in itself isn't so bad. But when I put a 4 slot Neo
Geo kit in it so I could put it at my friends arcade, then the hosing
began. I put in a few old(but not too old) titles and the game made
jack squat(like 58 bucks on split). If memory recalls, I ended up
with 1200 in the game, and ended up selling it for around 900 at
auction. Wish I still had it, but at the time, it seemed like the
heaviest beast in the world and I was in college to boot. Ahhh
memories.

When I traded away a dedicated Black Widow with minty monitor to
Gaymond for a nonworking Kozmik Krooz'r. I thought I'd get the game
running again but the power supply and boards are so complex I ended
up trading it for a color Bud Tapper cabinet. Still miss that BW.

I paid $400 for a Bionic Commando machine - regretted it the moment I got it.

I got a Xevious for $60, got it working and found that yes, I really did
hate that game as much as I remembered, took me months to get it sold and
out of my garage.

I like Xevious, if you have or know of any other $60 ones laying
around I'd be happy to take one home Smile
