I'm looking for a small town for my character background. The criteria
it needs to meet are:

1. It should contain or be moderately close to, ideally within 48 miles
of, a small, undistinguished university.
2. It needs an unusually large number of blacksmiths, preferably due to
a high rate of adventuring-party traffic.

Does anyone know of a town in the Flanaess that would meet these criteria?

Diamond Lake, in the Domain of Greyhawk might be good. It is close
to
Greyhawk which has several universities, and is a mining town. There
would be a lot of blacksmiths in a mining town. Also, it is on the
main
road between Greyhawk and the Duchy of Urnst, so it would see a lot
of adventuring traffic.

It was also featured in Dungeon's "Age of Worms" campaign as a
starting point and base, so there is lots of recent detail available
for it.

The universities might not fit if the desire is to be small, undistinguished
universities, but there are multiple universities in Greyhawk, which might
serve the need. Not all of them have the same reputation.

Diamond Lake is described in canon material as suffering from water
pollution from the mining operations, which may fit into your campaign
somehow.

Diamond Lake was also the starting point of the Living Greyhawk module
COR4-20 That Which Was Not Meant to be Known (which then has nothing to do
with Diamond Lake).
