If they are still around 15 years ago Woolworths were a large multinational
brand, now the brand is only in the UK (it's parent company still has stores
around the world (shoe shops)) but year on year Woolworths are doing worse
and worse and it really wouldn't come as a huge surprise to see it go the way
of C&A (another "feel good" brand) who had decent foot fall but low yield per
customer. WH Smith's are in the same boat and if and when the US credit
crunch hits the UK consumer market we could see some of the oldest names on
the high street going to the wall in favour of cheaper leaner online
shopping. If I want a HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, DVD or game I don't go into Woolworths
I'll go on line to the likes of Play and save 15% or more and so will most
people, those who don't tend to pick them up when shopping at there local
superstore or HMV. It's going to be sad to see part of the nations collective
childhood go but it's virtually inevitable now, the writing may not yet be on
the wall for Woolworths but the signwriter has ordered the paint.
