After a year I've finally finished Serpent Isle. I had a four hour
brainstorming session and after figuring a workaround for the serpent
gate bug I finished the game within 10 minutes of the New Year (am I sad
or what?). Started the game back in January and have played it on Exult
1.2.
I've just tried to close a couple of loopholes in my knowledge of the
game. I saw the Chaos Hierophant at the Gunpowder factory but I also
tracked him down to his resting place in the garden (of Enthusiasm was
it). He didn't have anything different to say.
Also I tried Order waters on Cantra. She doesn't get over her malady no
matter which water of the 3 you give her. Perhaps the original FAQ for
this group was right after all in some ways.
I still have a couple of questions. The vision of the hero from another
world at Monk Island was presumably a picture of something in this game.
But what exactly?
And I saved order and chaos by restoring balance but there are only
less than 10 people left alive on Serpent Isle after the ravages of the
banes .... so does it really matter whether they live in balance or not?
I've been reading the Ultima nitpick site (and laughing a lot over it
too). Perhaps I'll enter those points there.
Looks like I'll have to wait for Pentagram to be more fully developed
before I play Ultima VIII and Crusader. It still seems to be going
through major development changes every time I check the website. (Could
they use help from somebody with rudimentary programming skills?) I'd
quite like to play the two Crusader games I have on it but I'm not going
back to DOS so I'll wait a few years for those fine developer people to
do their stuff and play them back to back the way I did with the Ultima
VIIs.
About time I played something that only takes a month to play ....
anything apart from an Ultima for now....
Thanks for all your help over the past year. Ultima VII: Serpent Isle
was a rich game and I didn't experience any buys in Exult that couldn't
be overcome (although the Serpent Gate took a while last night and I had
to check my walkthrough ... I have to put the cubes of ice and fire one
at a time onto the plinth ... putting them all on at once didn't work.
That cost me a few hours work).
Cheers and I'll be back in a few years time when Pentagram is fully
playable.
Bill

You swap with the female automation that serves in The Blue Boar in
Moonglow.

Ah ... OK. Also I was wondering what happens to the spellbook you lost
in the teleport storm that Lord British gave you ... it never reappears.
Also what is the relevance of the pine cone and the blue egg that are in
your pack after that storm ... they never seemed to help much.
I'm sure more will occur to me later.

It's in Furnace, but burnt to a crisp. It's also not in a place you'd
encounter unless you were wandering around aimlessly.
A few years ago when I replayed SI for the fourth time I finally decided to
find it (with the help of the fine folks here), it's on a troll bed.
It's nasty too, because it explodes if you open it. Don't know if it can
actually harm you, though.

The blue egg is a penguin egg, which tells you that the Magebane is on an
iceberg somewhere with penguins. (they get very angry when you remove it, by
the way. )
I don't know about the pinecone though...
Thoughts, anyone?

*nods* Swapped, I think, for a dagger.
(Can't remember about the pine cone, though, except that one can get rid of
it by giving it to someone--a shop assistant in Moonglow?)

Doug the Eagle ... hey I've been reading your anti walkthroughs on the
web and killing myself laughing. I've got to buy you a beer or a keg
sometime....
I suppose SI with its linear plotting was a bit restrictive. Did you
ever get Dupre to be found guilty of his crimes?
Apparently there is an Easter Egg intro where The Guardian calls Batlin
a muppet. Any idea how to get that started?

According to Wikipedia on Smith he apparently has a clue to give in
Serpent Isle. I really cannot imagine where he might be but I suppose
somebody on Wiki could be having a laugh.

No .. sorry ... it's not Smith. My version of Exult has 2 horses in the
courtyard, two in the stables and one around the perimeter. The horses
are all identical black coats and fiery hooves and all called
"nightmare". None of them speak when clicked on. I searched the whole
dreamworld but couldn't find Smith.

Except he's there, search the usecode for "Rudyom's Wand". He tells you to
take it with you when you go to the black gate.
IIRC, he also attempts to tell you about Batlin and the others waiting to
assault you at Shamino's castle, but he wakes up before it happens.
And yes, Smith is a Nightmare, this is mentioned in "Balancing The Scales"
the official guide.
On a related note, you also meet Smith in Martian Dreams, where he gives you
a hint for Savage Empire, you meet him in a dream there as well.
