OK, I've got my hunter up to level 4 or 5 (I'm not at that PC now and I
forget) and I noticed that my attacks (melee fighting) didn't gain any power
when I leveled up. I caused the same amount of damage per hit (5 to 6) to
the same critters before and after I leveled. So, though I am higher in
level and it is taking a long time to get to the next level because I need a
lot more EXP, I can't really kill bigger monsters for more EXP because I'm
still this puny weakling.
I upgraded my equipment and that helped only a small amount. Most equipment
is unequippable to me because of my low level and the stuff I CAN equip,
while it has the advantage of being cheap, is not much better than the junk
I already had or got from killing a monster.
There's one thing I'm missing, and that is how to use my bow. I'll check
the manual when I get home because I am certain the answer to that question
is in there. But can someone explain why my attacks on the same type of
monster result in the same amount of damage before and after I gain a level? >> Stay informed about: Questions about WoW |

Hmm, as a hunter your strength is in ranged attack, so if you're meleeing
everything and not using your bow, it's no wonder you're struggling!
As to how to use your bow, there should be an icon on your skills bar
called "Auto-shoot" or something similar - simply click that and it'll
shoot until the monster is too close. You'll still have to melee it to
finish it off, but you'll have taken about half its health off in the
meantime.
Also any other shooting skill you use will start the auto-shoot off, so if
you open with scorpid sting (which I think you should have by level 4/5),
that will start the shooting as well.
I assume you've followed the level 2 quest which takes you to a hunter
trainer? If so, talk to him to learn any new skills available to you, then
look in your "Spell book" (name from memory, it's close to that anyway),
and drag your new skills from it to an action bar. Then you can use them
all easily.

To follow up on Catriona's excellent information, be sure to start using
your bow all the time, and master being a ranged fighter. That is your
strength, melee is only for last-resort combat. The best melee hunter
with all the right skill-talent setups and the hottest melee weapons in
the game, will still not outdamage an average range-based hunter with
a decent bow/gun. This is the way they were created- to be a great melee
fighter, at least later in the game when things get really tough, you need
lots of plate armor and defense like a warrior, or the stealth/stun/escapist
abilities of a rogue- and really good high-damage melee-oriented skills
and talents that boost your melee damage output high enough to kill
your opponents before they wear you down too much- the hunter has
none of these things.

Because the game mechanics don't work that way.
Weapons each have a fixed damage; you might do a *little* better over
time with the same weapon, because your increasing stats *do* get
factored into the calculations, but the change is too gradual for it
to leap out and be noticable. One thing that changes far more is how
easy you find it to hit a mob, and how easy they find it to hit you -
ie after levelling up you're doing about the same damage, but more
often, and you're taking about the same damage but less frequently.
But even that's not the main point.
Forget equipment quality at your level. What you do is far more
important than what you do it with. Use whatever drops, because you
have better things to do with your money. First and foremost, until
you know which ones work for you and which don't, get to a hunter
trainer and learn *every* spell you're offered as soon as it becomes
available (every time you reach an even-numbered level) and then go
out and find out how to use it. Spells are what make you different
from every other class. They're where your real damage-dealing (and a
lot of other stuff) comes from. People have already pointed out that
you're a ranged fighter at heart. You could be forgiven for not
having realised that yet, because the early spells don't make it
blatantly obvious, but it's the case - your close-range spells such
as, eg, raptor strike or wing-clip are things you use because you have
to, not your stock in trade. Once you get a pet, you'll begin to
understand why.
(The second thing to do with your money is to invest in more and
bigger bags to carry stuff in, so that you don't have to either throw
away half the stuff you find, or spend half your time running to a
vendor to sell what you've got. It's a balancing act, because bigger
bags cost more, but more space = more stuff to sell, auction of use =
more money. The third thing will be (by about level 30) to save up
the 90g you're going to need for the mount you're going to want to buy
at level 40. After *those*, spend money on equipment if you must.)

Thanks!!
Now I have a question about training a pet. A hunter trainer gave me a
stick and told me to train a webroot lurker. The knucklehead didn't bother
to tell me HOW to use the stick to train the webroot lurker (WL), and if
there's anything in the manual about training a pet I can't seem to find it.
So I walk over to a WL and try all sorts of things with the stick until I
finally right-click it and one of the charges disappears.
Of course all this time the spider is trying to kill me. Anyway, nothing
seems to happen so I right-click the stick again when I can. Again nothing
seems to happen but I can see that now I've lost two charges. I right-click
one more time, and now the WL shows it's in love with my by regurgitating
giant pink hearts, but all the while it's still trying to kill me.
In the end I was wasting healing potions and was out of charges, and the WL
had recovered from his heart-barfing fit and had never stopped trying to
kill me, so I killed the unloyal arachnid.
So I went back to see Knucklehead, trying to find out if I could get some
more instruction or at least get my heart-barf stick recharged, but he
wouldn't do either. Now I have a dead stick, a dead spider, and a
dead-headed trainer with no new skills or abilities that I can see.
What do I do? >> Stay informed about: Questions about WoW |

the quest should be in your log. Abandon the quest and he should offer
it again. >> Stay informed about: Questions about WoW |

Vitally important: Throw the old, useless stick away before you ask
for the quest again! Otherwise the game will just leave it in your
inventory, minus charges, and you'll be right back where you were.

That is exactly what happened. I then had to throw away the stick,
re-abandon and re-accept the quest. >> Stay informed about: Questions about WoW |
