Ah I love techie issues... got me a new monitor today, all seems to work ok
(albeit it's driving me mad getting used to the change of screenres - the
res I used to run looks terrible but it's weird using a larger one after 5+
years at my previous res!), *except* for when I close WoW, twice now it's
given me a lovely blue screen of death, the first time it wiped nearly all
my savedvariables, I spent about an hour setting everything back up, and
then it did it again. Grr.

Now, I've figured out the problem (roughly) - it's shouting about
nv4.disp.dll, and a quick google on that name tells me it's a drivers
thing... and hey, I installed a monitor driver with my new monitor, makes
sense that it's likely to be that. Now, the question:

Is it ok for me to just uninstall the monitor driver and just use the
graphics card without a specific driver for my monitor as well? I'm pretty
sure I never bothered installing the drivers for my last monitor and it
worked fine, and this one didn't noticeably change anything between when I
installed it and when I first turned the computer on without it installed.

Or do I *have* to look for updated drivers and whatnot, and hope they fix
it? Windows update doesn't have any monitor drivers (although admittedly it
does have a graphics card driver... but hey, it's worked fine without any
updates up until today when I installed the new monitor driver), so hunting
round websites for drivers will be a pain, especially as I tend towards the
"if it ain't broke don't fix it" school with drivers; usually updating a
driver causes me more problems than it fixes... like with my nice new BSODs
today lol.

You should be able to use the regular drivers, however, you probably
will not get the disired resolution. What monitor do you have and
what OS do you have?

Okay, try the EVGA.COM drivers, my card is EVGA though, but they
should work for your chipset. Give it a call and let me know.

LG L1953HR monitor, which let me set the res even before I'd installed the
drivers anyway, frankly I noticed no difference after installing them!
Windows XP (Pro, SP2) is my OS, nvidia geforce 6800 ultra graphics card
(drivers *not* up to date as the ones I have have worked fine up till now,
and I prefer not introducing potential problems - every time I've updated
drivers in the past it's added more new issues than old ones that got fixed
Wink)

Will give removing the monitor driver a shot then, just wanting to be sure
there isn't any essential reason to have them installed first Smile

I think that you may have missed the boat on that one unless you're
willing to buy a seperate copy of XP or you happen to have the OS
install disks for the machine you have.

I've heard that OEMs aren't allowed to sell machines with XP on
anymore and that some have been getting around the restriction based
on the fact that the PCs they are selling XP with are not powerful for
Vista. Presumably, you wouldn't want those PCs anyway as they'd be
underpowered and would need replacing too soon.

The file nv4disp.dll is NOT part of the monitor drivers but part of
the drivers of your Geforce.
Your best bet is to update the drivers for your Geforce whether you
like it or not.

I was under the impression that if you have a PC licensed to run
windows vista, you are entitled (legal) to instead run windows XP on
that machine.

Ofcourse you still need a valid CD/Key combination from another PC,
atleast thats what the company I work for do to overcome the Vista/XP
change, buying Vista Licenses but not migtrating from XP yet.

I was also told by a Dell sales representative this was true with
Windows XP and Windows 2000 Proffesional a few years ago.

Who knows if it will last 3-4 years, but it looks like a very nice
spec to me.

Infact ive just stumble across some official microsoft documentation
verifying this.

Looks like of you get Vista Business or Vista Ultimate editions you
have the right to downgrade to Windows XP Professional.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/6/2860872a-35dc-4a10-8617-3...aacd189

Hope the above link remains intact.

"nv4.disp.dll" is part of the Nvidia driver, not your monitor driver.
You may simply need to update to the lastest Nvidia driver.

If you still experience crashes, then remove the monitor driver
and try again.

But there were no issues before I installed the monitor driver, so it's
clearly to do with that and *not* the Geforce, be it a conflict or
whatever.

Aren't you running the new monitor at a different resolution though?
Which may be the cause for the graphics card drivers to spaz out.

Hmm good point. Well, I've done rollback on the monitor driver, will see
what happens with it like this; if there's still issues then I'll look for
updated graphics card drivers. Would've expected more issues while running
wow than on closing it though, it's weird.

Considering the increased resolution has made a corresponding decrease in
performance (I hit a new low of 8 fps in AB last night, normally it only
gets that bad in AV! :-/), I suspect I'll go with the "new computer" option
shortly, got to do that fast if I want Windows XP anyway, and I've not seen
anything I like about Vista as yet Smile

Nope, I'm not too late, it's still sellable on new PCs until the end of
June - I've been doing my research Wink But I do have to convince myself to
buy a new one *soon*, if I'm going to do it... it's already not available
on top of the range PCs, but that I don't mind because I'm not prepared to
spend 3k+ on a pc; my limit is somewhat lower than that!

Currently I'm looking at the following- is that good enough to last say 3-4
years?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 6MB Cache 1333MHz FSB
NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard
768MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8800 GTX
High Performance 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM 4GB
500 GB Serial ATA 3 Gbit/s 7,200 RPM with 16MB Cache

It's a significant upgrade on my current (3.5 years old) PC anyway, but I
don't know enough about the tech side of things to know how futureproof it
is! I know the hard drive isn't the highest btw, but considering I've not
even filled half of my current 200GB one, it's going to be more than enough
Wink Luckily I'm not a hardcore gamer, so don't mind being a bit behind in a
couple of years; WoW is all I play much, maybe in time I'll be on another
MMO, but cutting edge graphics etc aren't a massive requirement, I just
want half decent fps!

No PC on earth is good enough to last 3-4 years, if you intend to use new
software on it. Hell, I've seen top-end machines choke on games just a year
later. PC gaming is a mess in this regard.

Quite a nice setup though - it certainly will run wow and lich king without
a hitch. *

Well my current one lasted 3 years before I started having trouble with
it... admittedly I don't often buy new games though, so the only
performance hitches I hit are WoW patches Smile

Good to know - I can't afford to go top of the range so I'm aiming at the
best affordable setup I can get, hopefully that one will do the trick.
