Got the Witcher today (woo hoo!) and am happily playing it, but.... it
crashes about every 20 minutes or so. I have the latest patch, but,
well, you can imagine how annoying this is. Is this something that
everyone experiences or perhaps related to my particular HW/SW
configuration in my rig?
without getting into many details, it's a super fast relatively new rig
(dual, not quad core), xp media center, dual GF 7950 GT in SLI, latest
drivers, etc.... (I keep pretty much everything up to date).
Not asking about my setup per se, just if others are also experiencing a
lot of crashing as well?

I have a four-year old machine (with upgrades on the RAM and vid
card). I've been playing on-and-off for four days, have only crashed
once. Load times are painfully slow, but everything else is working
fine.

Not one crash. Is it updated? Are your video and sound drivers updated?
Try it with just one video card?

W/me it ran perfectly . . until several hours in. Then, every
time I saved the game, if I was overwriting another file, it'd crash
(but not if it was creating a new file). Weird crash. So I just
stopped playing and decided to wait until a patch. Went back to some
other games I'm tryin' to finish instead.
Plus, I didn't realize the U.S. version was censored when I
got it, so I figured waiting would also be good because someone is
bound to come out w/a mod/crack that'll uncensor it, swap the
movies/text to the uncensored versions, etc...
I can wait. =>

I've been playing for 2-3 weeks now. It has a tendency to crash on exit,
but I've also has a few crashes to desktop, and the odd lockup. You do
need to make sure you have latest nVidia drivers. The loading speed is
much improved by the 1.2 patch, but still slightly annoying.
Try changing the video resolution &/or detail levels. IMO the developers
have somewhat overreached themselves in that area, with major memory
mgmt issues at the limits (long before the framerate craters, you get
into crashy-crashy land). I also see a few video artefacts (coloured
spots dancing on the screen during loading operations; trapezoids, and
triangles, of darkness imposed on the screen, one one occasion all
bodies and faces went invisible (but came back after a reload), etc.
etc.
I am though trying to play in widescreen - the 'readme' recommends
1280*1024 as a maximum iirc.
The program (stupid, oh how stupid) doesn't use more than one core at
once, so will probably run =marginally= better if you use task manager
to set an 'affinity' to one core of the other (helps with the cache
mgmt).
It really is a great game (better even that Gothic 3), somewhat hindered
by a buggy implementation (but still better than G3).

For heavens sake, just upgrade the Vista installation to XP!! Even Dell

Yah, I can highly recommend avoiding the Vista/XP dual boot if you can...
Or use a utility (like Acronis Disk Director) that will handle the dual boot
system for you, instead of relying on MS to do proper housekeeping... I've
had plenty of experience with XP/Vista systems that work fine, but my new
notebook came with Vista and the first thing I did was pop XP on that
sucker... Put it on a separate partition so that it was completely
isolated, as I had experienced some of the evils of Vista when installing on
the same drive as XP... Everything was great for about 2 weeks, with only
an occasional blip or oddity, then WHAM the damn thing decided to jump off a
bridge and corrupt its master boot record. Luckily I know a few things, and
have some great disk utilities around, so I was able to figure out what was
going on... Ended up saying screw it, so now when I boot up I have a choice
of Windows XP Professional and, ummm, Windows XP Professional! Ah well, it
worked out, put all my programming stuff on the XP formerly known as Vista
side, and all my fun and games on the second partition.
And in the meantime, 2 of my colleagues and a friend have all fallen prey to
the dreaded "Vista ate my MBR" issue... Apparently MS is fine with you
going from XP to Vista, but they could not imagine in their perfect world
that anyone would want to go backwards from their shiny new bloatware OS to
something more stable, faster and reliable like XP... Why test what'll
never happen, right?

Blah, blah, double blah! Do some research - Vista is the one that hijacks &
mangles the XP MBR as it pleases, not the other way around. Unforgivable.
