The Witcher: Problem with Golem - Spoiler

I've managed to get the lighting rod but somehow managed to kill myself
when activating the last pylon - note to self don't stand inside the
triangle! - but when I tried going back to my last save the lighting rod
had just vanished. I then remembered that that the original reason that
I went back a few saves to find a point where I did have the rod as I
though I'd just manage to mislay it.

Anyone else get any better ideas of how to get around this problem?
