Error msg: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose
'Close' to terminate the application. CLOSE, IGNORE
OS: Windows XP 2002 Home Edition service pack 2
Just in case: Pent 4, 2.00 GHz, 256 RAM
Hello all,
I just borrowed Half Life 1 from a friend of mine. I understand there
is a DOS/XP compatibility problem. Not being the smartest guy with
technical computer stuff, I tried my limited brains on this problem and
came up with nothing. I'm not even sure if I'm understanding the error
msg right. I did a couple of searches for the error msg to see if
there's some kind of game patch or discussion--maybe there is, maybe
not, but I haven't found anything quite like what I've got. In fact,
most searches come up with Half Life 2 discussion, and when I specify 1
in my search, it doesn't really help.
My problem is that... I guess the error message above means that it's
trying to run a DOS game on a Windows platform...? Anyway, does anybody
know what I can do to fix this problem? Any patches or downloads? Throw
my computer out the window?
I understand I might have a video card problem to fix after this, but I
guess one hurdle at a time. >> Stay informed about: Half Life 1 w/ Windows XP "system file is not suitable for.. |

I don't know if the small patch is any different to the regular one, but
you should just be able to double-click the .exe file and let it run.
That's how the normal one works anyway.

Whoops, I just read your post properly.. I thought you meant that
error happened when you were running the game..?
So, what is the error message you get when you install? Is it the one
in your original post? and what kind of condition your the CD in? HL
is notorious for being difficult to install if the CD is dirty or
heavily scratched.
