David, forgive me if this is a stupid question (though as a teacher I
frequently tell my students there is no such thing, despite knowing that
there are in fact such things , but is it necessary to separately
download/install the new builds mentioned in the last paragraph, or are
they included in the applications? >> Stay informed about: Windows Frotz and Windows Glulxe updated |

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but you don't need to download the new
Windows Glk library if all you want to do is play games with Windows Glulxe.
Does that answer your question?

Yes, that's what I meant--you wrote "to go along with these", and (being
fairly clueless about writing/building Windows apps) I just didn't know
if that meant I needed to download everything in order for the
interpreters to work properly. >> Stay informed about: Windows Frotz and Windows Glulxe updated |

Ah, I see how what I wrote was open to more than the meaning I intended
Anyway, the Windows Frotz and Glulxe installers each contain everything
needed for that program.

Thanks, David. As an aside, kudos on the wonderful IDE for Inform in
Windows. It makes writing code effortless! (Well, as effortless as is
possible when writing code .
Out of curiosity, how complicated would it be to allow the user to
control the coloring of the windows? I like how the code is colored to
show me what's quoted and what's commented, etc., but the different
shades of blue are all really close and I'd love to be able to adjust
that. Don't worry about it if it would involve major hacking on your
part--it's just one of those little "would be nice" things.

It won't be difficult to do - I've had an item on the "to do" list to add a
preferences dialog to change such things for ages. Eventually I will find
the time to actually implement it

It's quite tricky to add that, due to how Frotz's display logic works, which
is in turn due to Frotz's support for V6 games. This is more of an excuse
than an explanation, I admit ...

Your to-do list must have come from the same litter as mine...! If the
electronics companies can include batteries with everything now, why
can't new to-do lists come with extra time...???

I just gave it a try using screen reading software "JAWS 8.0" (a
program used by blind people to access the contents of the screen).
All menu commands and dialog boxes work fine; however, the main output
area sometimes seems not to update, although sighted friends tell me
new content has appeared.
Example:
1. Introductory screen of story is displayed; screen reader works
fine.
2. I type "l"; screen reader indicates so.
3. I press <enter>; screen reader acts as if the "l" had disappeared---
in particular, the newly generated output (a room description) isn't
spoken.
(The story file used was "jigsaw.z8".)
Note that the problem is strictly screen reader-related (the display
does the right thing at all times). Furthermore, I don't know if the
same problem would be encountered with other screen readers---just
JAWS (at least all versions from 5.0 on up).
I'd be willing to do more testing if this is helpful.

Yes, I know it doesn't play nicely with screen readers. However, it's not
obvious what to do about this: screen readers generally seem to work by
hooking themselves into low-level bits of the operating system, and none of
them publish any information on how a program is supposed to be able to let
the screen reader know what text the display represents. Microsoft does have
something called "Active Accessibility", but most screen readers seem to
just ignore this. Sigh.
