Archived from groups: alt>games>video>xbox (more info?)

So I've been doing the Wii thing for a week now (I'm even posting this
from the Wii browser).

So far it's pretty underwheming. The only compelling reason to get one
seems to be "they're really hard to find".

You really need to have more than one person around for Wii Sports to
be even remotely entertaining. The only reason I've turned it on in
the past week is to check weather and news (both of those channels arr
kind of cool, well, as cool as wathing the 11 pm news or going to
Google News).

Everyone Votes is a joke. The polls take days to tabulate and there
are never more than a handful available. So once you've voted and
predicted how each vote will turn out there's nothing else to do for
at least a day until the oldest poll calculates and a new one becomes
available.

The polls are limited to two choices to choose from and you can't
directly submit your own polls, you can only suggest them to Nintendo
who is presumably scrubbing them (otherwise there would be, I'm sure,
700 polls asking "oral or anal?")

The browser is ok, with the exception of not being able to select
text. Composing something like this is fine. Replying to someone else
and tryin to edit down their post to just what I want to comment on is
a pain in the ass.

I also pretty much hate the one finger typing. Would it have killed
them to support dual Wiimotes on the keyboard screen?

I's taken over 6 minutes to just get this far...

But then I'm guessing the browser isn't really intended for content
creation.

Well, really it was just proof of concept, to see if it would work (it
does and it shows the Wii in the post headings.)

> as for games, do you have zelda?

I got tired of waiting on the Wii and picked it up on the Gamecube
months ago. I bought it mostly to round out the Gamecube collection as
the "last" GC game. I find the Zelda series pretty boring.

> wiiplay held my interest for about 5 minutes..

You have to get to the very last game on Wiiplay... it's a tank game
where you move the tank with the nunchuck and aim the cannon with the
Wiimote. Essentially Atari Combat for the 21st century. Fantastic
idea...

Booby-bandit goes on a system bashing rampage and lives to tell the
tale.

No, the only joke around here is Booby-prize-bandit who buys every new
system just because they are shiny and black, and laughs in the face
of a Wii, which is the real hot next-gen product here.

Graphics are not the only thing that make games fun, dickwad.

I can't believe you even botheed getting a Wii Jordan.
The system is a complete joke and is only selling because of price and
marketing.
The Wii will be an after thought come this time next year.

i don't know why you're bothering using the browser, especially for
posting to newsgroups! i think it sucks, but then i have a media center
pc hooked up to the tv so i've been spoilt

the everybody votes thing is a waste of time, the wii shop is good, i
bought the original super mario and mario64, got a classic controller
it's good to burn a few minutes. i know, i can emulate them all on my
xbox for free but i don't care.

news and weather, well i can get that stuff easier on the computer so i
haven't really looked at those features much

as for games, do you have zelda? i didn't find wii sports to be that
great apart from the bowling which is good fun, wiiplay held my interest
for about 5 minutes.. but zelda.. it's the first game i've played in
about 5 years that i've spent more than 20 hours on, it's awesome and i
reckon i'm only about halfway through!

the 480p graphics are a real downer though, i play pc games at 1280x1024
and going back to 852x480 or whatever it is, it's just awful... but
component cables helped a lot ($15 on ebay, screw the $50 nintendo ones!)

Primary reason for buying it was to have my Gamecube games in
progressive scan. Oh, and the classic Sega and Turbo games on tap. I
have no illusions about the quality of the sytem.

By this time next year it will be solidly in first place.

But that makes no sense. The Wii is only $50 cheaper than an X360 and
is running circles around it in sales. OTOH, back in 2001 the GC was
$100 cheaper than both system, but never caught fire like it has now.

So obviously it holds some appeal other than price.

You hit the nail on the head. Basically the people buying the Wii are
buying they're first game console and, by extension, know nothing
about them. Now, I'm not saying the Wii is garbage...I am saying the
Wii is not a next generation system...it's basically the Gamecube v2.0
with a fancy-pants controller...

That's bullshit and you know it. The 20gig PS3 was never really
available, and plenty get the Core.

Of course, they are stupid for doing so - falling for the marketing
ploys that these corporations use to trick them into thinking they are
buying something cheaper.

Confusion? Don't be thick. The only difference is whether it has a
hard drive or not. People know that.

Stop pretending the Wii is not expensive. It's still 2x the price of
the Ps2. The Wii is selling to people who dont know anything, or care
anything about console gaming.

They want the latest cool toy - like the iPod or Tickle Me Elmo.

Didn't you just rant about the shoddy quality of the 360? If that's
the case, then you are contradicting yourself.

People purchase the 360 core about as much as they do the 20gig PS3.
Nobody takes the core system seriously and hopefully MS will discontinue it
ASAP to stop consumer confusion.
Especially now that they have 3 SKU's on the market.

$100 dollars cheaper isn't $150 and 350 (<-- from what is considered the
indusrty leader).
Most people don't purchase consoles until a couple price cuts but with the
Wii you don't have to wait.
Both MS and Sony have set the bar too high for the average consumer but you
get what you pay for can't be stressed enough.

Collecting dust and the ony games (for the most part) worth playing, if
you're not completely burned out like me, are in house games. On a positive
note for Nintendo I don't think developers want to compete with directly on
the same console. Maybe this is why support on their past 2 consoles was so
scarce
