Nintendo's Wii beats PlayStation and Xbox

By Claudine Beaumont
Last Updated: 2:11am BST 30/08/2007

The Nintendo Wii has become the fastest-selling games console in UK
history, with more than one million consoles sold since it was
released in December, latest figures show.

The Wii passed the milestone just 38 weeks after going on sale, 11
weeks faster than the PlayStation 2 took to reach this target, and 22
weeks faster than the Xbox 360, according to Chart Track, an
independent sales tracking company for the gaming industry.

The console has taken the gaming world by storm, thanks to its
innovative motion-sensitive control system and family-friendly games,
such as Big Brain Academy and Wii Sports, in which you use the
"wiimote" to participate in games of tennis, bowling and baseball.

The sales figures are particularly impressive because the Wii was in
short supply following its much-heralded launch just before last
Christmas [ie, Xmas 2006], and has only recently become easily
available again.

David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK said: "The non-stop
demand for Wii, even in the traditionally slow sales period for video
games in the UK, is clearly behind this record-breaking achievement.

"With the increasing number of unique software titles for the system
from Nintendo and third parties, [the Wii] is being enjoyed by both
avid and new gamers of all ages."

It is another blow for Sony, whose latest console, the PlayStation 3,
is lagging behind both the Wii and Xbox 360 in terms of sales.

The next-generation device, which offers high-definition gaming and an
integrated high-definition Blu-ray DVD player, has been criticised for
its high price (around £400), and has suffered from slow sales in the
UK.

Around 165,000 PS3 consoles, which went on sale in the UK in March,
were sold in the first two days, but sales fell by 82 per cent in the
second week, according to Chart Track.

I could say the same thing about PS1 or PS2 vs their competition that
didn't sell nearly as well.

Blah, blah, blah. Just because something is more popular doesn't actually
mean it is better. Quite often the opposite is true because the better
art is too intellectual for the dumbass sheeple. I think that can be
safely applied to why the Wii outsells the other consoles.

Fasting selling in the world.... Considering it comes with one of the
best games for the system it's worth the $250

Note, however, that Sony made it a point to emphasize how the PS3 had
the most successful console launch in U.K. history. If popularity
(translated from sales) is not an indicator of how good a console is,
then you could say the same about Sony.

Look at it from this perspective... does it matter that Transformers
isn't going to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award when
it's the highest grossing film of 2007? Would it be valid for film
"afficianados" to say that anyone who likes Transformers is just one
of the "dumbass sheeple?"

In other words, just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean it's not
good.

I see your point.... The question is do the Wii sells hurt PS3 and
XBox 360 or has the market just expanded and does the Wii fall into
its own category without directly competing with PS3 and XBox 360? I
don't think it competes head on for the same market space and we have
an offical report from Gamestop saying sells are up 7x what they were
last year at this time. Just last year the video game industry crossed
over to become more profitable than the recording industry. I think
the market has changed so dramatically that we can't think of all
there systems competing with one another.

There are some cross-platform games like Madden 08 and movie tie-ins
like Transformers: The Game that will make their way on to all
platforms, but I don't think that alone is a good measuring stick
because if you compare the Wii version of Madden 08 to the PS3 or XBox
360 version, it's clearly its own thing, with focus on the controller
and not on graphics.

I think the Wii occurpies it's own space right now. We have handeld
consoles and we have the hard core or you could even say traditional
home entertainment consoles: PS3 and 360 and then we have this new
category for Family casual gaming console. That's a niche Nintendo has
always filled very well, but with the Wii's controller, low price and
great bundled game it's just a great little package to pick up. I know
Microsoft and Sony have both declared Nintendo as their #1 competition
and they need to stop that and worry about each other. Microsoft has
the strongest Holiday line up for 2007, but their E3 offerings sucked
and it's obvious from those who they are trying to compete with, but
Scene It XBox 360 edition isn't going to turn people away from the
Wii. Microsoft needs to let casual gamers have their system and stand
secure in the traditional gamers market, they have so far the best
visuals in games, they have the true HD output, they have a fantastic,
I would say only next-generation on-line gaming experience for now.
They need to stay focused on their strengths and just come to terms
with their weaknesses and stop trying to appeal to Nintendo's market
share.

I completely agree with you. I'm sure there's a percentage of the
people who purchased a Wii who may purchase an Xbox 360 or Playstation
3 at some point... and maybe the hype of the Wii meant they purchased
Nintendo's little engine that could instead of one of those two
systems...

But I doubt that the Wii has significantly impacted sales of either
Microsoft's or Sony's system.

The target demographic for the Nintendo Wii is the group of people who
have never played video games before or only play casual games that
don't require a lot of investment.

It's doubtful there were hardcore gamers out there who were going to
spend $400-600 on a 360 or PS3 and then decided to buy the Wii
instead. The best Nintendo could have hoped for with the hardcore
crowd was for the Wii to be the second or third system behind one or
both of the other two. It's very obvious from the posts on these
newsgroups that hardcore gamers aren't going to abandon games like
Bioshock, Halo 3, MGS 4, etc. for Cooking Mama and Wario Ware.

That's why it's so surprising to me that the hardcore gamers here are
constantly crying foul with Nintendo, as if they believed that the Wii
was somehow going to supplant their console of choice and make "truly
next-gen" consoles a thing of the past.

The Nintendo Wii can peacefully coexist with both the Xbox 360 and the
Playstation 3. Group A doesn't have to stop playing GTA and Splinter
Cell just because Group B is playing Wii Sports and Super Monkey Ball,
and the studios know that.

Sure, you could say that about a lot of things in this effed up world of
ours. Most people would rather read a waste of time book from the likes of
Daniel Steel instead of something that actually has something of meaning
to say from the likes of Albert Camus.

In other words, someone feels threatend that their precious PS3 isn't the
winning console this time, and is consoling himself with sour grapes.

The only good console is the one that plays the games you like. So long
as you're happy with that, why feel threatend that others chose a
different console? Afraid that if you actually tried the Wii, you might
find that it's actually fun?

Likewise, just because the masses DO like it doesn't mean it's bad either.

The masses like breathing - therefore by your logic, breathing must be
bad, overrated, and just for sheeple. You're free to stop breathing and
prove what a independent visionary you are...

If 10+ million owners like Wii Sports Bowling, it doesn't mean it's good
or bad - just that 10+ million owners like it. Nor are your opinions
going to change the fact that thing has sold millions of copies.

Don't attribute logic to me that I never used. I made a one-sentence statement.
Please explain how the logic of that statement implies that breathing is bad
because everyone does it.

Or maybe you are confusing me with another poster in this thread?

I have a Wii, and I think it's ok. Personally I'm waiting for better games. But
my opinion of it would be the same if no one else bought it or if 50 million
people bought it. The masses like some things that are good (The Sopranos), and
a whole lot of things that are bad (The Bachelor).

It's called personal taste and opinion. Just because you think the
world of this Albert Camus, whoever he is, doesn't mean anybody else
has to agree with you. It's arrogant to presume that everybody should
like the same things you like or that just because you think something
is garbage means that everybody else has to agree.

That's absolutely true. All it means is that for each member of the
generic group "the masses," it *is* good.

"Good" is an opinion. In order for a video game to succeed
financially, it simply has to earn that opinion from enough people to
make a decent amount of money.

If a studio produces a game that is considered "good" by a significant
majority of the market, it doesn't really matter what the rest of the
market thinks about that game.
