EA/Dice doesn't allow for widescreen resolutions in the Battlefield games,
as it would add a wider view angle than standard 4x3 ratio screens and thus
give those widescreen users an unfair advantage. There are hacks to get the
game to render across the whole display, but everything is stretched to fit,
ranther than scaling properly and giving you that extra bit of view that
others might not have. The solution would be for them to allow for custom
FOV settings, like the Quake series, but they don't seem to want to budge on
this subject, so they leave FOV fixed and only 4x3 resolutions are made
available.
