I admit I haven't had time yet to explore everything in OFB. In fact, I
haven't even read about how to run a business yet.

But I've noticed there are a lot of new strange costumes--veils and
diving helmets and such. There were also bizarre additions in the other
expansion packs--Viking hats and what look like swimming goggles.

Are these there for any specific gameplay, or are they just there to be
"weird"?

Well, some of the outfits are supposed to be for salesmen trying to convince
you to enter a shop or eat there, and thus be like mascot costumes. Like the
bonus chicken costume (for a chicken place) or a diver for a seafood store.

Some of the other goofy stuff, like the goggles from NL, were supposed to be
"club" wear.

I also just think the people at Maxis have the fashion sense of a drunken
pirate. (A straight one at that...)

Oh yeah, a man in a chicken suit always gets me hungry for some BBQ wings.

Oh yeah, I see lots of people in night clubs wearing swimming goggles.
